I've already posted before about my struggle with regaine but I'll post it again and see if anyone has any advice...

Just to start off I just turned 20...

I've been thinning on top for quite a while now - been an issue for 2 years or so. My family and me always thought I had a pronounced crown and hoped the problem would go away but that stage of denial lasted too long and we realised my hair WAS thinning and so last May I started regaine (Uk name for rogaine).

I went travelling around mid June and cut my hair very short to make life easier. I had the expected shed beforehand (after 2 weeks) and wasn't worried as I knew it would happen and got on with it. During these travels as my hair grew back I realised it was thicker.

Upon my return in July/August (so 2-3 months) it was noticeably thicker A lot thicker. Happiest times of my life. I re-visted my trichologist who was stunned by the results and even suggested I wouldn't need to use it 2x a day. Of course I do - that's just there to show the extent of re-growth after only three months as he said that.

So that was great. A great summer of thick hair and was about to start uni looking great. During this time I didn't apply the regaine EVERY morning and night - I would most times but occasionally I'd go round to a girls and not want to bring the stuff with me and so miss an evening's application . I don't think I ever missed both a mornign AND night dose - but I would get a little sloppy, and just point the stuff on my head and spray it, rather than spend ages carefully applying it and rubbing it in...I also started uni and sometimes I couldn't apply at night as I shared a room and it was embarrassing but I did most days...(I've got my own room now)

Around September/October time my hair still looked ok - but wasn't getting any thicker. It was quite long by this point though but still looked good, but in October I got it cut, but not that short, just a little bit off to keep the style going, and afterwards it looked SO thick.

But by November time it grew long again and I noticed it seemed a little thinner. And it kept getting thinner as it got longer. I started to panic and so made sure I religiously applied it EVERY day. As November and December went by I saw little improvement, and so virtually all the hair gained through the summer seemed to dissapear. November saw shedding after brushing or styling, but this went by December time.

My hair was very long then. And I recently got it cut very short hoping to make it thicker. It looks so thin now - and a lot of the regrown hair has gone. So I'm 9 months in and after 3 months it regrew amazingly, by 6 monthswas thinner, and 9 months a lot of it has gone.

What should I do? Why has the regaine stopped effectively? Someone suggested because I wasn't consistent - but since October time I have been religious with it- and when I was inconsistent I was only slightly.

Could it be the fact that my hair was fairly long, intercepting any minoxidil that needs to get to the scalp? Or can minoxidil just stop working? I can't see my being a non-responder to it because the thickness of it in the summer proves i responded really well!

Has anyone experienced this? It's such a radical change and rapid growth and loss it's scary? I'm hoping with short hair the minoxidil will easily get to the scalp and regrow thicker like the first time I got it cut, but aren't so sure.

I'm beginning to consider finasteride. I'm petrified too though as 20 is very young to f*** around with hormones and there's the side effects and it frightens me - I was hoping to use it as a last resort but should I just go for it now...?

Please help. I was so happy before - and a better person with thicker hair as I used my confidence for good not arrogance - and I'm miserable again!

I'd appreciate anything. It's bad enough not having the treatment work, buit to have it work amazingly and then for it to stop within 6-9 months is just cruel...

that's so long...here's a bitesyze version

Month 0 - start regaine
Month 3 - unbelievably good and numerous regrowth
Month 4-5 - no more growth but still looks good
Month 6 - looks slightly thinner
Month 7-8 - worryingly thin
Month 9 - where's the regrown stuff gone?

Total of only two haircuts in this time. Could be the reason. Occasional blip in not applying both days, but that was around 3-4 months and so should be thick now.

Will it regrow again?

Do yourself a favor and get on finasteride as soon as possible.

The risks aren't anywhere near as bad as you think they are.

Agreed. The idea of maintennence is a surprisingly comforting one.

At month 9 you may be going through a shed.

Your on and off applications of minoxidil can hamper the results and cause you to shed (often weeks later).

Not having a DHT inhibitor in your arsenal will mean that minoxidil will grow you some extra hair to take with you as you slide towards baldness.

Don't expect too much from a single topical medication splashed on sporadically.

interesting points...

re tynan - cheers for that - but it really wasn't that sporadically. Think we've discussed this before - it wasn't like I did 8 applications a week instead of 14 - it was more like 11 or 12 on occasions - it wasn't like every week. Mostly 2 doses a day. But if that still takes it's toll okay. The shed occurred in November which was weels later I suppose so here's hoping it'll grow back now I've been religiously applying (and over applying) since November. Oh and I'm on Nozoral. Dunno why as my scalp still itches now and again but everyone else does so when in Rome..

Just so I know - the biggest fears with propecia I have is with libido reduction, breast enlargement and risks on cancer...can someone fill me in on these things or direct me somewhere else? And the whole reproduction thing...your kid will be fine so long as you go off propecia for a week. What if you get an unplanned pregnancy??

I'm just worried about the drug. I know it'll really help but I don't want to start taking it and then have to stop after realising it's harmful. I know everyone here hates people panicking about this but in the UK it's really hard to find out the info...and if I'm going to use it i'll need the info to give to my mum who's terrified of the idea of me taking hormone affecting drugs cos my trichologist said he fears the 'unknown' about proscar..

yeah he said basically it's not been used long enough to know the long-term side effects.

But it is kinda true. I mean what if it creates nasty side effects 30 years on or something...?

There will be other places that will prescibe it though I just have to find them. Sadly they're all in London and that's far away!

Where can I do the reading just to be sure? I'm sure propecia.com won't be THAT good as they can't really say "using propecia will make your bollocks shrink!" cos they got a product to sell!

What if vitamin pills show to make your skin fall of in huge flakes when we all reach 60? What if birth control pills make some girls' pussies dry out like the Sahara when they reach 45? What if the ancient Viking gods actually live in the sky and in 30 years time we will all be slain by Thor's sledge hammer?

"What if you did?
What if you lied?
What if I avenge?
What if eye for an eye?"

From: Creed - What If...

Come on, get serious. You can say that about everything. This product is extremely thouroghly tested and been on the market for like 10 years.

Oh my god! I'd be killed!

No, not you... I was referring to your trichologist.

no I know mate! I just wanted the reading myself too because as he sorta said that it meant it scared the sh*t out of my mum who was with me (she helps me financially with the regiments because it's either that or a manic depressive and suicidal son!) so I need some reading for her to persuade her (and me) that it's a worthwhile thing.

Buffboy's post was funny except for the Creed reference. Even Jesus hates Creed.

Anyways, as stated below, I'm ready to face the ultimate punishment for my battle against hairloss

Oh right I did not know that hopefully in ten years time there'll be a complete cure and I can drop the stuff!

Can I just ask how your regiment is working? I just looked and you have some special mix of minoxidil and other stuff as well as finasteride etc...

not me!

the thing is if vitamin tablets do cause something people can stop taking them and that's that...

If we stop taking propecia the hair will fall out AND our hormones will be messed with...then again if I didn't take propecia I wouldn't have the hair that would fall out IF it was unsafe...

I guess I'm just worried about taking a pill for the rest of my life - that's quite a long time seeing as I'm only 20 - and potentially needing v**** as well if I can't get it up as a result of finasteride!

But maintenance is the key. I don't have a massive head full of hair and it's noticeable if I don't style it (and probably even so but only for really close people who've known me long enough to suss it) but I like to think I'm pretty enough to make it less important...but I can't go properly bald or I'd rather die!

But where can you get decent propecia in the UK? Will I need to see a doctor for it?

This is around 2% (1 person in 50) the majority of this group will notice this side effect subside with continued use.

breast enlargement

This is around 0.8% (1 person in 125) will have some level of Gynaecomastia.

Finasteride is not a carcinogen

This is no correlation between theoretical birth defects and a 1mg daily dose of finasteride, Merck the manufacturer of propecia has withdrawn it's warnings regarding this.

mr_sparkle said:
I'm just worried about the drug.

There are many more food additives and medicines in common use daily that have got a worse saftey profile than finasteride, you may want to look at them too. If aspirin were a new product development it would not pass FDA trials, finasteride has.

Finasteride has been used in doses five times that for male pattern baldness for over 12 years, there are estimated to be over 5,000,000 (5 million) users worldwide. If you are worried about saftey profiles this much I hope you are avoiding alchohol, aspirin, ciggarettes, saturated fats, hydrogenated fats, trans fatty acids and many many many other things we KNOW to be vary bad for you.

It's a pity you don't have access to the internet. I was in the same situation as you when I started and had to fly to America every few days to look up information in Libraries.

You are right to be concerend about disruptng you endocrine system, I suggest avoiding high fat foods (affects free testosterone), milk, soya products (soy), meat, any non-organic foods rich with hormone-affecting pesticides, food with a high glycemic index (to keep insulin under control), you should also move as close to the equator as possible to avoid the annual rise and fall in meletonin production (often refered to as the master hormone) that living in the UK (and the northern hemisphere) will impose on you. Also avoid wet foods (fish, meats dairy products) that are in direct contact with plastics, as the chemicals used to soften the plastic leachs into the foods and is know to disrupt hormones (this particular chemical problem is know to be significantly worse for women), this also applies to hot drinks in foam/polystyrene cups and containers (no pot noodle for you!), and don't forget potentially dangerous hormone disruptors like Persistent Organic Pollutants and PCBs found in farmed fish, while we are dealing with meats don't forget many hormone-disrupting chemicals including dioxins accumulate in animal fatty tissues.

I could go on and on and on....

There seems to be a negative slant to your whole look on this.

Why have you put the word 'But' at the start of the above sentence?

It's like "But of course you can't get Propecia in the UK can you?"

You can get decent propecia from numerous places, have you looked yet?

You can try http://www.QHI.co.uk

I think you may have all persuaded me. Thanks I really appreciate the help especially Tynan who's responded to practically every post I've made despite my posts usually being niaave and stupid! I don't get the internet at uni and it's embarrasing going on a hairloss forum in public so when I'm home I bombard the place with questions due to lack of reading!

What do most people reccomend for finasteride? I'm thinking probably just the normal generic propecia as it is the trusted product and probably the easiest to get hold of in the UK. Is that the best way or would another form of finasteride be better? the Qhi.co.uk link didn't work...

The breast thing scares me cos I kinda have man-boobs! despite not being fat at all I still have man boobs and if I have a week or kebabs and curries that's usually where the weight goes! I'm sure it'll be fine though!

You guys may have saved my life! I'll give you a shout out when I'm a rich and famous model with lush long golden hair...
