Fear of taking Minoxidil

I am a diffuse thinner, and have been on 1.5 finasteride for about two months and have been seeing slight shed (I think, it's hard to tell when your hair is buzzed fairly short). I really want to get onto minoxidil because I heard it works wonders on diffuse thinners, but I am terrified of either having to take the stuff once a day (let alone twice) or seeing my hair fall out after quitting it.

Is there ANYTHING I can do that is low-commitment but yields good results?

lol yea the finasteride you're already taking. how hard is it to take 1 minute to slop some minoxidil foam on your head?

you shower everyday don't you?
you spend hours on the pc everyday?
you eat everyday?
you sh*t everyday
you sleep everyday?
(some ppl f*** everyday, while others masturbate everyday)

what else is there left to do everyday? i got it! apply the darn minoxidil

Sleeping, shitting and masturbating doesn't cost me money, or give me greasy hair for the entire day, does it?

i think he was implying using the foam

which dries almost instantly

it is however an lifelong commitment

but if you want to keep your hair i suggest using it

its alot easier to maintain than it is to regrow you know

If you want to keep your hair, I very STRONGLY suggest not using minoxidil alone!! :)

minoxidil - topical
Finasteride - internal
Nizoral - shampoo

When used together, your 3 best fighters in the hair loss battle.

I'd give the finasteride at least 6 months before deciding to use minoxidil

Can anybody else cosign on this? Because if not, then I'm on my way tomorrow to pick up some generic 5% minoxidil

I say it depends. I'm a diffuse thinner but it was starting to minituarize big time and I had a couple of bald spots already so I decided to add minoxidil after taking finasteride for 3 months. In those 3 months I noticed the finasteride had stopped the hair from falling but I did have a shed within the first month and it was depressing but I kept up with it and I'm above baseline at the moment.

Why? I was using minoxidil by itself for around 2 years with good results. I know people who are using minoxidil by itself for around 5 years and they are happy with the results.

Now I'm using minoxidil with nizoral. A couple of weeks ago I decided to try spironolactone . I want to give spironolactone some time.

Why?

Because the best available scientific evidence suggests that topical minoxidil doesn't stop or interfere with the fundamental balding process in your scalp. You'll still go bald, even while using minoxidil, at about the same average rate as when you're NOT using minoxidil.

Haven't you seen those graphs I've posted several times before from the 1999 study by Dr. Vera Price? Even after 96 weeks (which is almost 2 years), haircounts and hairweights of the minoxidil users were still above their starting baseline, although they were gradually declining at about the same rate as the subjects who were getting the placebo.

yeah I remember that Bryan. I know a few guys who are on minoxidil for around 5 years now and I don't see them getting worst then when they started using it but I guess it also depends on the progression of the hair loss.
You said that you wouldn't use minoxidil alone..... so, finasteride + nizoral + minoxidil. But I know a lot of people (including myself) who refuse to take finasteride. Too bad RU is not easily available, however, I think it will be eventually.
So, all we have is spironolactone 5% which is kinda weak but better than nothing...

Yes. There's also an earlier study of minoxidil by the respected hairloss researcher Dr. Elise Olsen. She did an extended 5-year examination of the effects of topical minoxidil, and found that haircounts were still above the original starting baseline even after that much time, even though they were definitely declining.

I agree with you completely. Topical spironolactone is kinda weak, but it's better than nothing! :)

Well since my thread attracted you Bryan, what's your take on going six months with finasteride before trying minoxidil vs. using both at the same time right off the bat (or in my case, after a month of finasteride)?

Oh, I think either one is okay. But it seems logical to try finasteride first for a while, since that's all you may really need, if you're lucky. Using topical minoxidil every day requires a more serious commitment than simply swallowing a tiny blue pill.

Great, thanks for the info. I will definitely read more about those two items.
When it comes to spironolactone, I think people should give more time before making any judgments about it. Calling it snakeoil is absurd.
It's hard to see the results of spironolactone because it's for hair maintenance.. it most likely wont regrow hair.

How long you've been using spironolactone?
