Hi there, I am 37 and recently got married, wife though has pointed out to me that the hair at my temples has thinned and in places gone, I never noticed, but I think she is right! sooo I am tempted to start one of the many treatments around ...the pressure is on though to start a family even at my advanced age, and am concerned about the effects on an unborn child if I take such medicines during 'making babies'...thanks

i think as long as you keep it in a safe place (somewhere where your wife won't touch it) you'll be fine. it's a very valid concern though. you should talk to a doctor about it

Thanks for the quick reply, may refrain from taking any yet and keep a careful look at my forehead and see if my hair grows after a haircut as it used to do , after all the active ingredients of any of the medicines will show up in semen I guess and that in turn is going to end up in the woman's body , so cannot be good, not sure what to do really, on top of that wifes on sibling has chronic leukamia and she is a valid marrow donor, again if she gives bone marrow it cannot be done whilst she is pregnant, so got alot on my mind at the moment, and does anyone know when the antiandrogens are ejected form the body after stopping the medication?days ?months?

It takes about two weeks for DHT levels to reach normal values after discontinuation. Half- life of finasteride is 6 hours, so it doesn´t stick around for that long.

Whether or not finasteride dissolves through the skin is a debated matter. Just to be safe, keep it away from your wife, while she is pregnant (that is, she shouldn´t touch the pill.) I have not come across any evidence that finasteride can be found, even in traces amounts in the sperm. People have fathered healthy children while they have takes proscar or propecia. However, semen parameters may decrease, as DHT acts on cells in the epididymis. So there is a small chance your fertility may decrease.

Discontinuation of the drug should take care of that, though, in a couple of months.

Todd ta for the reply, so making children as far as you know is ok whilst on these medications that contain finasteride? and the only concern is keeping the tablets away from the wife? ok good, as things stand I will be happy in preventing any further loss, it has started at my temple region although oneside has lost more than the other, again will give it 1-1.5 months and see how the hair at the front of my head grows or not after my recent haricut....it took my wife to point it out otherwise I wouldn't have noticed

your 37 mate not 87. my father was 46 when he had me and that was 31 years ago.

Taking finasteride may lower ur chances of having childen but id deffo make 100% sure. Go to ur doctor, a doctor whos got a clue about finasteride.

Dimitri,
It is well established that trace amounts of finasteride are found in semen. However the amount is completely negligible. There has not been a single case of a birth defect in the United States that is attributed to a father talking finasteride while conceiving. It is completely safe.

With all this being said, I would still not personally take finasteride if I knew I was going to conceive.

thanks Timbo, life has been nuts recently being of mediterranean origin we had a big scare over whether we both had the thalassaemia gene trait= 25% chance of an very ill child , dr.s got her dna results wrong so we are good to go with a family, so will look to a reliable place to pick up finpecia or a cheaper alt to propecia etc etc as I have checked the web and finding a 'kosher' looking site available is tricky, plus they need to be able to deliver here in cyprus....

Thanks for the reply, the more I think about it the worse I feel - hairloss that is, I can get it out of my head, nearly had 2 accidents on my scooter to work as my mind wanders, ok Finpecia I am having difficulty sourcing it here in cyprus, but have found one chap in India who buys from pharmacies and sells on via the web making some profit for himself as he says, alot of fake stuff is circulating but if something is so cheap in the first place what is the point is trying to duplicate...?

Can you not get a prescription for proscar from a local doctor?
I only pay about $10 for 100 5 mg finasteride pills - which is more than a years supply of 1 mg finasteride a day.

Gubter87 thanks, Medication is notoriously pricey here, very very, a standard pack of say paracetamol sets you back like 8-9dollars, is there anywhere I can get the finasteride online that you get?or is it only prescription>? the fella in India is selling $145 for a years supply of finpecia, which does sound pricey but it is all relative, compared to prices of pharmaceuticals here that is cheap...local doctors here need hmm lets 60$ just to see them, and I doubt they know about proscar, I may approach a pharmacy and see if these are available without prescription and what the prices are like...

thanks for the feedback, back to the point if guessing how much I have lost, I will take photos on a regular basis, as I think i have receded slowly on one temple much more than the other and my hairline in front I guess has retreated, is it possible that it will stop receding?or is it usually downhill once you do start to notice a receding hairline?
