Hello, I have been lurking around these forums for some weeks now and think it is a great site to ask for some wisdom. I am scared to death about potential hairloss. Currently I don't think I have started yet, but I have a double crown with two big cowlicks so it might seem like I am balding in the crown. I have taken pictures over the last year and can't say it is any worse. The problem is I have become obsessed with balding. I am a short dude 167 cm and fear I might end up short and bald. I joined these forums because my father is a Norwood 6. I have went trough my family tree to find out what chances I have of keeping my hair. I have read that the onset and aggresivnes of hairloss is inherited, is this true? My father was really thin and balding at 20. His older brother is over 60 with nice hair. Their father was quite bald I think and his father again had hair. On my mother side there is no male pattern baldness. My maternal grandfather had hair when he died and my mothers two brothers have no male pattern baldness. My mothers oldest brother is 64 and he has nice thick hair. I am soon to be 25 and my mother says I have hair nothing like my father. My older brother is 31 and has no male pattern baldness, my younger brother is 22 and has bad hair. Not sure actually if he is balding since some on my mothers side have bad hair, but they don't go bald. Can I assume I have most likely avoided the balding gene since I am older than my father when he started loosing his hair? Unfortunately I don't have the neccesarry equipment to upload photos at this moment. But my hairline has stayed put I have a mole at my hairline so it is easy to monitor, the double crown is frustrating since it might seem I go bald, but I can live with it as long it doesen't get any worse. My mother also has a visible crown due to cowlick does that mean anything at all?

A visible crow due to a cowlick is no indicator of balding. It is a natural parting as the hair separates in all different ways- not balding. If you are worried about balding, a dermatologist can do a bulk analysis and actually tell you if you are balding. If you haven't actually lost any hair though then you really shouldn't waste time worrying about it; I used to be terrified about hair loss due to my high forehead and naturally thin hair. By the time I realised it wasn't due to hair loss- I started actually losing my hair. All that time I wasted.

I guess you are right about not using to much energy on it. But the question remains is the onset of balding and speed of it inherited? Considering my father balded quickly before he was 20 and I myself is soon 25 and still have my hair mean that I don't have the same genetic for balding as he did? Or does onset and aggresivness differ?

Obviously its not exact, like if your father is 6'3" does'nt mean that you will also be exactly 6'3" but the likelyhood of it is that your not going to be short.
But then again it depends which side you've inherited your hair genetics from. There is such a thing as genetic dominance.

Ok I see, but s.a.f you say where you have inherited your hair genetics from. I have cowlicks in my hair and so does my mother. My hair is more similar to her part of the family than my fathers. On my mothers side there is no male pattern baldness does this indicate I have my hair genetic from her side and will most likely not go bald, or could I have nice hair at 25 and the balding gene that my father obviously has is just lurking around ready to explode? I read that a hair transplant clinic said that if everyone in a family that balds bald at about 20 and you reach 30 witout balding you are as good as safe, but I haven't gotten any confirmation on this. Is is just mumbo jumbo?

Your hair type is never an indicator of your likelihood to suffer male pattern baldness. The balding process is sub-dermal and does not occur within your hair, but around the follicles. You could have inherited your dad's hair for example, but a predisposition to lose your hair from your mother's side. I apparently have the exact same hair type as my mother's dad, who died at 62 with a full head of hair, and I started losing mine at 14.
