Family history of baldness.

I don't really need to do a lot of thinking where my genes come from. My father went bald in his twenties and the cousins of my mother also went bald in their twenties. So I got it from both I guess.

Hi Toms,

*I have one sister, no brothers. She has healthy hair, no hair loss. All my cousins on both sides of my family that are around my age have healthy full heads of hair, I'm the only one that's balding.
*My Father is a diffused NW5, still has a full head of hair, but it's thin. My Mother has no hair loss. The uncles on my Father's side of the family have diffused hair loss, all of them have hair but it's thin. The aunts of my Father's side have no hair loss. On my Mother's side, none of my aunts have hair loss. The uncles however, do have male pattern baldness with NW6 patterns.
*Both my Grandmothers have all their hair. My Paternal Grandfather was very thin on the top. My Maternal Grandfather is a slick bald NW6.
*I am unsure of what the hair of my Great-Grandparents were like.

That's my Family History.

Thanks for the replies. ;)

I'm just curious whether there are more people that get the gene from mothers side or fathers side. So both of you got it from both sides

Yeah, sure thing.

I honestly think I got my male pattern baldness from my Maternal Grandfather because he's slick bald with a NW6 pattern, he's the closest relative that's completely bald, and I have thinning in a NW6 pattern. He's also the only one that I know of from both sides of the family that's totally bald on top of his head, so that's why I think I got his male pattern baldness.

Hello, everyone.
I just find it interesting to see from where the baldness gene comes from.
I would like to know your family history of baldness, what age(approximately) they started balding if they did.

I'm a girl so IDK if this is helpful to you or not, but here is my family history:

* Brother is 17 and is seeing the first signs of baldness already I think :( I don't think he knows it yet but I'm quite the Norwood-spotter and his temples are definitely receding. For cousins all females have full heads of hair but my 2 male cousins are definitely receding at 21 and 25.

* Father is 50 and NW5, which has been a slow but ongoing process since about his early - mid 30's from what I can see on pictures. My mother and all aunts all have full heads of thick hair aged 50-60. All my uncles (aged 50-60) are balding in the NW5-6 pattern except one uncle which is still NW1-2 on my father's side.

* Both my paternal and maternal grandfather are NW7 (at age 85 and 90), but looking at pictures they still had a decent amount of hair left in their 30's-40's.

* I have little information about my great-grandparents except that my great-grandmother on my mother's side had a full head of hair until she died of old age.

All in all I have a family history of male pattern baldness among men, but not among the women. IDK why I got to be the unlucky one suffering from this evil disease. I did see one of my grandfather's female cousins once, and she appeared to have thinning hair but I don't know if that is the source of all my misery. Also she was like 70 so it could have been just thinning with old age.

uncles on mother's side: all nw1s in their 50s
maternal grandfather nw3 when he died at 80
uncles on father's side: a nw1, a Norwood 4 and rest nw2-3 (dad also nw3)
paternal grandfather: dont know, never met him

I have 3 cousins on my dad's side all nw1s in their 30s, so better hair than me at 18

Thanks for the reply ;)

I really feel you on the little brother thing, he is receding just as much as I am(maybe little more), but he is only 17, he also probably doesn't know it yet, I also didn't see his hairloss until I started receding :// I hope he will be alright, since he is into bodybuilding stuff and he's around 5'10 already so hopefully he grows another inch so that he doesn't go through the hell of balding and being short :/

My brother is tall (5'11-6') so at least he's got that going for him.. But seriously balding at 17 is terrible... I feel bad for him

Maybe it is time to tell your little brothers that they may be balding so they get on treatment asap and don't lose any more hair until it is too late?

Mother: got her father's really thin hair, not balding though.

Dad: NW3V, started at around 40, almost 44.

Maternal grandfather: was receding at 14, bald at 19.

Paternal grandfather: started receding at 70, now 76 and a NW5.

Uncle (father's side): exact same as my father.

Me: started receding at 13, NW2.5 at 15. I can see my hairline thinning to NW3 territory under light. :(

How does it work for women?

Paternal grandfather: nw7 Paternal grandmother: very thick hair
maternal grandfather: no balding, thick hair Maternal grandmother: thin hair, but not too bad

dad: Norwood 6. mother: thick hair, but some frontal receding, which is strange. Brother: NW3 (40)

Me : diffuse thinning all over scalp
