I just bought and used t/gel for the 1st time and I love the way my scalp and hair feels after use... I don't use the conditioner. The only thing is that it smells like freshly poured road tar. Not a big deal but it smells during application.

last question:

Does T Gel inhibit DHT? Doesnt Nioxin do that?

Neither have been shown to 'Inhibit DHT." TGEL is a first class anti dandruff, anti inflammatory and anti fungal agent. It was use in the propecia trials and probably made propecia look very very good in the bargain.

Nioxin is a nice shampoo plain with no therapeutic effect that I know of.

Last question, swear:

If Nizoral and T Gel are both anti dandroff and not DHT inhibitors, why do you need both?

Because each different dandruff shampoo contains a different key ingredient, ie coal tar for TGEL, Keto for nizoral, Zinc Pyth. for head and shoulders and so forth.

Fungus and bacteria are smart little critters and soon adapt to the fungal agent. Rotating keeps them dumb and dead.

TGEL was used with propecia in the trials.

How effective is PROPECIA?

2 Year Results

What can you expect from PROPECIA?
Most men can expect no further hair loss. In clinical trials where hair loss was measured by the number of scalp hairs a man gained or lost, 83% of those taking PROPECIA showed no further hair loss on top of their head after two years. This compared to 28% in the group taking a dummy sugar pill (placebo).

'83% Showed no further hair loss'

Remember you should expect to take PROPECIA every day for at least three to six months before you see any visible results. And you need to keep taking it to keep your hair. Once you stop taking PROPECIA, the hair loss process begins again.

'66% at 2 years showed increased hair growth'

<http://www.propecia.co.nz/images/linkarrow.gif> Long term results - see the 5 year PROPECIA data

PROPECIA Clinical Trials

To find out if PROPECIA does really work for men with male pattern hair loss, two 1-year clinical trials were conducted on 1553 men with mild to moderately severe male pattern hair loss on top of the head. The trials were conducted in 16 countries around the world. 1215 men elected to continue in double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover, 12-month extension studies.

The men in the trial
The men enrolled for the trials were aged 18 to 41 years. They all had hair loss, which ranged from mild to moderately severe – stage II to V on the Norwood-Hamilton scale.

Norwood Hamilton Scale

<http://www.propecia.co.nz/what_can_i_expect/effectiveness/images/hamiltonnorward.gif>

Placebo-controlled – men in the trial were divided into two groups. One group received genuine PROPECIA, the other received dummy pills that looked identical to PROPECIA.

Double-blind – the packets of pills were coded but otherwise unmarked, so neither the patient nor the doctor knew whether the pills they were using were PROPECIA or dummy pills (placebo).

Randomised – the doctors and men in the study did not know whether they were going to receive PROPECIA or placebo. This was randomly assigned at the start.

Multicentre – the trials were carried out in different centres around the world.

The trial process

Once in the trial, patients were not allowed to alter their hairstyle, or dye their hair. At the start, all patients were given placebo pills for a two week run-in. This helped them into the habit of taking pills once a day.

All patients used the same shampoo throughout the trials (Neutrogena® T/Gel®). Once started on a course of pills, patients visited the clinic every three months, where they were assessed.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Patients were evaluated using the following assessments:

Hair Counts
Researchers counted the number of hairs men gained or lost from a small area of clipped hair (cut to 1mm in length) at the front of their head. This was done using microphotographs (extreme close-ups) of the area taken with a specialised camera system, preset for focus, distance (primary magnification 1:1.7) and exposure. A dot tattoo placed in the middle of the clipped area was used to centre the photographs. Photographs from the start, at 6 months and at 12 months were converted in to dot maps of each visible hair, and hair counts were made using scanners and imaging software.

Patient Self Assessment
Patients completed questionnaires consisting of 4 questions about their treatment’s effectiveness, and three questions about their satisfaction with their own appearance.

Investigator Assessment
The doctors conducting the trials (investigators) assessed patients using a standardised rating for hair growth: from –3 (greatly decreased) to +3 (greatly increased).

Global photographic assessment
3 dermatologists experienced in photographic assessment of scalp hair growth reviewed standardised colour photographs from test centres around the world.

View Photos...

The dermatologists did not know which patients had received PROPECIA and which had received placebo (they were ‘blinded’). They graded each photograph using the same rating as the investigators (see previous screen).

Safety Measurements
These included adverse event reports and clinical and laboratory evaluations.

Back of the Nioxin bottle states that stops DHT from adhering to the hair follicle and prevents hair loss. Lies?

I would ask them for their PROOF that this occurs! I really like the Nioxin shampoo and conditioner for their cosmetic effect. However, these guys really play fast and loose with their claims.

Goes under the heading of don't believe everything you read!

I read the propecia section on this site again and it says the participants in the trial used a shampoo like Nizoral. I thought I remembered reading that Nizoral was the shampoo they used, because there isn't any mention of TGel.

As you can see, the propecia manufacturer seems to recall that it is TGEL!! :freaked2:

The purpose of the anti-inflammatory shampoo (Tgel/nizoral) was to keep the scalp in good condition during the trials, nothing more. They knew that flaking can occur as you introduce changes to the hormonal structure of the skin on the scalp, most notably being a drying effect, increased sebum, oiliness, mixture... its a weird thing, but thats what sebborhea is. The shampoo controlls that.

The study was done a long time ago and since then people have had much greater success with Nizoral than TGel so its just usually recommended. It wasn't until later that some research was done on the other effects of the shampoo, and it was shown to have similar growth stimulating properties as 2% Rogaine. When I called them to get the official word on it, they refused to comment, because the FDA would put them in jail for making any claims like that without an official FDA trial... which would cost an arm and a leg and not be worth it for them.

As for DHT Inhibiting? Ask Bryan :)

Remember you should expect to take PROPECIA every day for at least three to six months before you see any visible results. And you need to keep taking it to keep your hair. Once you stop taking PROPECIA, the hair loss process begins again.

Does anybody know if the hair that was maintained on finasteride means, that once started on day one you should maintain this hair if you are a responder, barring any sheds (which I assume you regrow). Or does it mean that you will start to maintain the hair you have at approximately the six month mark of finasteride treatment if you are a responder. For instance, I've been on finasteride for almost 3 1/2 months, does this mean that my maintaining won't begin for 2 1/2 months from now, or if I am indeed a responder, am I maintaining what I had in November, and that I will regrow my sheds. Any insight on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
