Endocrine effects of masturbation in men.

Purvis K, Landgren BM, Cekan Z, Diczfalusy E.

The levels of pregnenolone, dehydroepiandrosterone (DHA),
androstenedione, testosterone, dihydrotestosterone (DHT), oestrone,
oestradiol, cortisol and luteinizing hormone (LH) were measured in the
peripheral plasma of a group of young, apparently healthy males before
and after masturbation. The same steroids were also determined in a
control study, in which the psychological antipation of masturbation
was encouraged, but the physical act was not carried out. The plasma
levels of all steroids were significantly increased after
masturbation, whereas steroid levels remained unchanged in the control
study. The most marked changes after masturbation were observed in
pregnenolone and DHA levels. No alterations were observed in the
plasma levels of LH. Both before and after masturbation plasma levels
of testosterone were significantly correlated to those of DHT and
oestradiol, but not to those of the other steroids studied. On the
other hand, cortisol levels were significantly correlated to those of
pregnenolone, DHA, androstenedione and oestrone. In the same subjects,
the levels of pregnenolone, DHA, androstenedione, testosterone and
DHT, androstenedione and oestrone. In the same subjects, the levels of
pregnenolone, DHA, androstenedione, testosterone and DHT in seminal
plasma were also estimated; they were all significantly correlated to
the levels of the corresponding steroid in the systemic blood
withdrawn both before and after masturbation. As a practical
consequence, the results indicate that whenever both blood and semen
are analysed, blood sampling must precede semen collection.

Contribution of dihydrotestosterone to male sexual behaviour.

Mantzoros CS, Georgiadis EI, Trichopoulos D.

401 Military Hospital, Athens, Greece.

OBJECTIVE--To document the relative importance of endogenous sex
steroids in modulating the frequency of orgasms, the dominant aspect
of sexual behaviour in healthy eugonadal men. DESIGN--Measurement of
adrenal and testicular sex steroids in a sample of army recruits and
study of their relation to frequency of orgasms ascertained by
questionnaire after potential confounding variables were controlled
for. SETTING--Military campus and military hospital laboratories in
Athens, Greece. SUBJECTS--92 consecutively enrolled healthy male
recruits aged 18-22 years. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES--Weekly number of
orgasms. Serum concentrations of testosterone, dehydroepiandrosterone
sulphate, dihydrotestosterone, oestradiol, oestrone,
delta-4-androstenedione, and sex hormone binding globulin.
RESULTS--Serum dihydrotestosterone concentration was the only
independent hormonal predictor of the frequency of orgasms; an
increase in concentration of 1.36 nmol/l (about 2 SD) corresponded to
an average increase of one orgasm a week. CONCLUSIONS--Differences in
concentrations of circulating dihydrotestosterone within the normal
range may represent a major predictor of sexual activity in healthy
young men.

i doubt jerking off causes hairloss but i must say since i limited it to once or twice a week as apposed to 3 times a day when i was younger, i feel a lot better and energized all day. jerking off drains your body. also it makes later sex feel a whole lot better. its all about the man juices fellas! you need to keep the man juices in you!

Perhaps it just exacerbates baldness

I don't know that there is a direct correlation between masturbation and baldness, because if there were, then there would be more bald men in the world (I think the percentage now is around 30% of men go bald...?).

However, it may be that masturbation exacerbates hairloss in those men who are already genetically predisposed to it. But, if there was a relation there, one would have to do some serious jerking off. I mean, all day, every day. It actually has to be an addiction. You have to put off school and work and women and everything just to get at yourself. If there are people like that in the world, then they have worse problems then baldness.

Well, the second study only has to do the effect of DHT on male orasms. I think it goes without saying that it CAN effect sexual functions; Merck's clinical acknowldges this as a side effect.

That being said, I love studies. They crack me up. I've seen studies that directly contradict each other. The second one here, though, is a nice definition of an ambigious side effect.

I've had no note worthy sexual side effects, so I don't think this thing is true in 100% of men.
