Efficacy of Verbascum songaricum Schrenk hair tonic in androgenetic alopecia: A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial

Background: Although Saponines are some of major components of Verbascum songaricum Schrenk and they have been proven to be effective in hair regrowth stimulation, there is no trial in assessing this tonic in alopecia.
Material and methods: In this double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, 26 male patients between the ages of 16 and 45 with II to IV grades of androgenetic alopecia were randomly assigned to receive Verbascum songaricum Schrenk hair tonic (14 patients) versus placebo tonic (12 patients) every other day for 6 months and then followed for another 2 months.
Results: After a 6-month commencement of tonics, 11 out of 14 patients in Verbascum songaricum Schrenk group versus 4 out of 12 patients in placebo group showed improvements in stopping the hair losses (P < .05). Mild pruritus was seen in 2 out of 14 patients in the Verbascum songaricum Schrenk group, whereas none of the patients in placebo group experienced this problem (P > .05).
Conclusions: In this study, Verbascum songaricum Schrenk hair tonic was effective and well-tolerated with no considerable adverse event in treating hair losses. Further studies with longer periods of treatments were required to confirm these results.
