Effects of upping finasteride dosage

Hello gents!

Ok i'll try keep it as short as possible, been on 0.5mg of finasteride for about 6 months, did 0.25 for a few weeks to start with, had no side effects so far and by about month 4-5 i noticed quite significant thickening and possible regrowth of the crown, however the hairline remained unchanged....

now at 6 months

i have been experiencing a big shed along the hairline for the last few weeks and getting a bit freaked out, i'm hoping that like the initial crown shed i had in the early days - this is possibly a delayed shed of the hairline and it will come in thicker in a few months? Anyway, given that i have had no side effects i was wondering if i should up the dose to 1mg? And what would the effects be on the hair if i was to do so now?

I'm about a NW2.5 but can easily make for a NW1 with a bit of concealer and keeping a short haircut, also on Minoxidil 2X a day.

Just a bit worried about inducing side effects by going for the full dose..

Thanks in advance!

the effects of upping dosage will be somewhere between very slim and nothing on both side effects and results relative to your current .5mg dosage

Thanks for the reply, to be honest i wasn't planning on upping the dosage, and to do so would be through panic of this current shed, i suppose it will just be more peace of mind knowing i'm taking the full recommended dose, i'll have to think about it some more

Cheers!

Another question, is it normal / possible that the front / hairline may take longer to respond than the crown? Like i say the crown has responded well at the 4-5 month mark, but the hairline is taking a hit on this current shed, and it would be encouraging to know that it may take the full 12 months to start filling in or thickening given it's the hardest part to treat...

Regards!

for most people the crown responds better than the hairline. You may eventually get regrowth or not at the hairline, but it is unlikely the quality of regrowth will be as strong as at the crown

Yeah i wouldn't expect anything major at the hairline after reading these forums for years, i do hope though that the hairline recovers back to at least baseline after this shed as i'm sure some terminal hairs have shed...

Also forgot to mention, i apply minoxidil x2 a day to the crown but only x1 to the hairline on a morning due to me using revivogen along there at night, i'm thinking of dropping the rev in favour of a second application of minoxidil at night, maybe this will thicken up the hairline a little?

Regards!

The only way I was able to thicken up the hairline was by applying minoxidil 2x daily. finasteride alone did nothing for me with regards to hairline regrowth

That's encouraging Spanishlad, i'll try x2 day minoxidil to the hairline, been applying x1 for about 9 months so not expecting anything major, but a bit of thickening would be nice

Yeah dont expect miracles just be consistent with your treatments. I didn't even notice my results until 2 years on finasteride..

whats that mean bruder ! need an bro scienceists opinion (srs)

Basically finasteride has a very flat response curve so 0.5 mg is almost as effective at reducing dht as 1mg and 0.25 mg is about half as effective as 0.5 mg

As such 0.25 mg may help your hair but why not just take the full 1mg recommended dose?? If the results are fairly similar between different doses then so will the sides be.

After reading all the replies and gaining a better understanding, i have just 1 more question that has been bothering me..

What would the cause be of one minute in month 4-5 my hair looking better than ever at the crown with thickening and possible regrowth, to just 1 month later into month 6 it looking like s**t again, thinner looking, and a bit of an acid test is how much more fibres i'm having to use again compared to half that when me hair looked great...

is it most likely shedding, or can finasteride just randomly stop working 6 months in? The latter seems a bit strange, and i'm wondering if
It's a seasonal autumn shed?

Thanks!

It could be a shed but everyone has times when their hair will look better and other times it will look worse.

Treating hairloss is a bit of a rollercoaster ride for us all. Try not to think about it month by month its the longer term that counts.

As for finasteride losing its effectiveness after 6 months, I highly doubt this is the case, just stick with it.

Thanks Spanishlad...(any British in you out of curiosity?)

I have, to be fair, read countless posts on 'one minute my hair looks great the next s**t', so i suppose that helps, but when it's finasteride it is a bit worrying as it's marketed to us as a drug that keeps our hair...so a shedding explanation would be very welcome!

Par for the course i guess, hopefully by month 12 i'll be very happy with the results...

Thanks again!
