Dyed Hair (blond to black): Bad for hair?

I have had good results now in my 6th month of Rogaine, but like many blonds (with miniturized hairs), there are plenty of very fine hairs that are on the crown, that you cannot see, and are still getting better with minoxidil.

I only have about 1/4 inch hair on my head, but I decided to dye it black just for kicks. The results are amazing. You can see ALL of the hairs now, and I honestly look like about a Norwood 0.5. All those crown hairs that were the one missing thing (although improved tremendously from minoxidil), are now dark, and you can see the entire head is covered with hair.

I expect minoxidil to continue to bring these hairs up, and make them thicker and darker naturally (afterall, blond is really darker than colorless).

However, I am wondering, is there any long-term effect or damage to the hairs from dying? I am only thinking of doing it maybe twice a month, especially as the blond hair continues to come in and strengthen and darken. I liked doing it just to do somethign different, having shaved my head for three years. The comments from friends and coworkers were like "Wow, you have hair, why do you shave your head anyhow?"

But will dying counter the effects of minoxidil (I think Dr. Lee says no), or damage those hairs? What if I am doing it so infrequently as 1-2 times a month?

dying your hair is bad for your scalp.i wouldnt recommend it unless you were just dying the tips.... those dont touch the scalp.Although i have actually heard of people dying there pubic hairs and all the hair theey dyed fell off...although pubic hair is diff from hair on your head.....you see my point though

I dye my hair too and its looks a lot thicker gives color to the thin colorless hair,I have heard that some chemical dye can cause thinning my bro started thinning at 16 after dying his hair black all the time with chemical dye

I use a natural hair dye call hena its not as strong as the chemical stuff and does not last that long 6-8 washs
but will not harm you hair, I think it maybe good for it

you should be able to get it from a health food shop and its fairly cheap

Dye

I called Rogaine today just to ask this question. They said it is perfectly ok and that they have thousands of members who do this. They did advise against dying your hair and then using minoxidil within 24 hours, stating that having two different chemicals on your skin might not be good.

Too late, I already had applied mine by the time I was speaking with her, with no negative results anyhow. I never get any of the redness or flaking, etc, that others seem to talk about.

Well, I probably will only dye my hair a few times just to see. Dying it blond to me, will not provide enough color to those thinner hairs, anymore than my natural color does...I guess ash blond might.

The black thing looks cool. I have to tell you, there is something encouraging when people at work were like "why do you even shave your head, you have tons of hair" etc. The black dye definitely brought out that top part of the head where the blond, colorless type hairs made me look very thin.

I'm going to let it grow about a month, and only shave up the sides with the clippers...just to see.

i dont see how dying ur hair would speed up male pattern baldness.

its all in the follicle, which is below the scalp.

Dying your hair black is only good if you use it to dye the velous hairs on your head then take pictures of it, put them on the internet, and claim that some homemade hairloss treatment is bringing your hair back, and finally selling it for thousands of dollars. sorry, (end of sarcasm mode)

i have found dye to make my hair fall out like crazy. these hairs that fall out, have not grown back. I firmly believe that dye is harmful and speeds up hairloss.

I really don't have any concrete knowledge in this subject but I do know somebody whose hair I firmly believe has suffered from dye. Some guy i know would dye his hair a different color every month from the time he was 13-15. He's now 17 and most definetly balding. Whether this dye had an affect on his male pattern baldness i'm not positive, but i suspect that it accelerated it.

hmm

maybe I'm expecting too much, but I would think as long as chemical dye has been around, there would be FDA-mandated warnings by now (if not tons of anecdotal information) on bottles...and sales would be WAY down for women, who dye there hair all the time. Not saying YEARS of it won't hurt your hair per se, but the follicles? I dunno.

Elvis dyed his hair black for 20 years and had nice, thick hair at 42. Most female models dye their hair off and on, various colors...many male actors most likely do too.

Well, I only did once...and I might a couple more times. Haven't seen any fall out..just know it looks good.

It actually looks...(sigh)...."normal"....wow, I said it. NORMAL

I love the way my hair looks after black coloring...I do every 3-4 weeks. Been doing for about 13 years.

In response to your arguments regarding women dying their hair all of the time, no one has said dye causes male pattern baldness, just accelerates it. If you don't have the genetics for male pattern baldness, dye isn't going to give them to you, but I firmly believe dye does a hell of a number on follicles. If you keep it off the scalp, i'm sure it would be fine. My hairloss seemed to be triggered by my dying of the hair. the very first time i dyed it, hairs started falling out. I thought it was just due to the damage from the dye, but those hairs never grew back. I firmly believe the dye accelerated what was going to happen to me eventually anyway.

I've telled this tale before - About 10-11 years ago I dyed my hair twice, a red color that didn't take too well the first time, so I do again. I shed tons after that, and that's when my frontal area first showed some scalp.

I don't know if this is just with certain chemical dyes or what. I think I used 'miss clairol.' Bought at the drugstore. I remember the instructions did say not to get it on the scalp, but I didn't see how that was possible. My hair density had already decreased some then, so there was no way for me to use a dye that must stay in for 10-15mins or whatever without it getting on the scalp.

Anyway, Hair Warriors beware these dyes. Maybe they make more natural, scalp frindly dyes these days, but this subject has come up several times before over the years, and I ain't the only feller whose had a significant shed from hair dye.

Chicks' hair, and other non-male pattern baldness programmed heads can surely take dyes lots better than we Hair Warriors' heads can. Also, many get pro dye jobs where they use tin foil and crap and the dye stays off de scalp.

Hair Warriors Beware!

How does henna work? How to apply? How long to leave on?

how does hena work just like any other hair dye i guess

how to apply. it eather comes in a powder or ready made in a past
if you get the powder just mix it with hot water into a thick gunk and apply it to your hair then cover you hair with a hair mask and towel to keep it warm and leave 30-45 min then rince out, try to keep it off your forhead as it can stain a bit
its also used for non permanate tatoo's

I used it way before i started thinning and it used to give my hair body and make it look very thick, the only problem i can think of is you have to redye it a lot if you puting lots of stuff in your hair like nizoral minoxidil etc
