What's the story with Dutasteride(avodart)?

I know it inhibits both isoforms of 5-alpha reductase, while finasteride(Propecia) inhibits only one. But , it states that the side-effects are more uncommon than with users of Finasteride. How is this possible if Dutasteride inhibits more that Finasteride?

Also , why is Finasteride the first choice when it comes to using anti-androgens? Why is Dutasteride only used by certain people?

It seems a lot of people use Dutasteride as a second/last approach to treating their hair-loss. Why is this? If they get side-effects from Finasteride surely they'll get sides from Dutasteride , right?

And finally , what is the sucess rate on Dutasteride compared to Finasteride?

I might be mistaken, but I believe the reason is that Dutasteride has not been officially approved for use as a hairloss treatment, where as Finasteride has.

True.. Although I knew that already , I meant to ask why it hasn't been approved? Doesn't make any sense to me.

Thanks for the reply anyways, that doe's explain why Propecia might be a first choice.

Something else to consider is that I think Finasteride in Proscar form then quartered is significantly cheaper than Dutasteride per dose.

Where does it state that? I'm pretty sure that's not accurate. If you look at dutasteride studies, the side effect profile is very similar to finasteride if not higher.

If you're inferring that from reading posts here---I would take those with a grain of salt.

Dutasteride has not yet been approved for male pattern baldness bcuz the study for male pattern baldness has not been done yet. Ppl use Dutas as a step up from finasteride, bcuz finasteride is already effective and it is approved for hairloss, so when someone starts using Dutas instead of finasteride its bcuz finasteride its losing its effectiveness, and Dutas is more powerful, so it might work.

From Dutasteride.com:

Dutasteride side effects are usually mild and transient. Drug related adverse effects of dutasteride certainly appear to be less than those associated with finasteride. The most common side effects of dutasteride are sexual effects including:...

That is not an official site for Avodart/Dutasteride, but put together by some random person for whatever unknown reason.

I'm unable to locate them at the moment, but if you search around this site there is a table of instances of side effects of finasteride vs. dutasteride taken from the clinical trials and you'll see that this is untrue.

Nobody can really peer into the thought processes of the nice folks at Glaxo to find out the exact reasons for why they decided not to pursue male pattern baldness as an extra approved indication for dutasteride, but it does seem fairly obvious that they just didn't want to spend all the extra $$$ on what is, after all, just a modestly more effective drug for that purpose than finasteride.

the strengt of the medicine will give you stop of hairloss or regrowth...

its simple calculation :

fina : blocks dht for 70% , and slows down hairloss , or stops it, or if your lucky some regrowth...

duta : blocks dht for 93%, mutch higher then fina can do... also the workingtime of 1 cap = 280 hours
so the halflife of duta is mutch higer...

as for the dht in our scalp...

fina lowers scalp dht by 30%
while duta lowers scalp dht by 50%

i started 1 year ago with all my produkts...
duta included , for me it was all or nothing at that time....

The term "scalp DHT" is a less significant indicator of balding than you probably think! :)

So obviously if I got side effects from taking 1mg of Finasteride daily then I will get side effects from taking Dutasteride daily.

Does someone know, for how long will stay just 1 cap of dutasteride a 0.5 mg in my body/system. Ive read that the halflife of dutasteride is 3-5 weeks, what does that exactly mean?

If you were to take 1mg of a substance with a half life of 4 weeks, then 4 weeks after taking it you will still have 0.5mg active in your system.

Does that make sense?

That means after taking 0.5 mg dutasterid, i still have around 0.25mg in my system after 3-5 weeks (duts half time).

Thanks for your answer
