dutasteride accomplishing what finasteride could not...but with sides

First of all, scientists really need to find a way to make this stuff a topical, or something similar because it really does work.

I began taking finasteride (1mg - 1.25mg/day) October 2010. I never really got the results like some of the success stories on here (peapoddy, SE-freak, strange karma etc.). I would say my results peaked at month 7 (May), but rapidy declined. Heavy shedding occurred like never before in July and August. I did not have confidence that it was worth waiting the full twelve months. So by month 11 (September 22), I got a script for Avodart. I began taking 0.5mg/day for 30 days and let me say that the results I have experienced in 30 days, has been amazing compared to the 11 months on finasteride. Thicker hair shafts all over, great density, quality of hair looks and feels better, no itchy scalp etc.

After 30 days though, I discontinued using .5mg/day.

I am now on approx day 36 and am experiencing some scary sides. Brain fog, fatigue, libido and ejaculation issues. I MAY try using .5mg every third day

My dilemma now is, should I continue using this medication with hopes that the sides will disappear as my body gets accustomed to this stuff?...Or flush this stuff down the toilet and don't look back? I really wish I wasn't a vain person and could just shave my head and be done with this $hit.

Has anyone used this stuff before, long term? If so, please share your experience and provide some feedback

What does your doctor say?

I have no experience with dutasteride and only a little of experience with finasteride. All I can say is that my finasteride sides get better and better...maybe it works with dutasteride as well.

I won't tell him. He would pull me off dutasteride ASAP. If the sides persist, my only option is to discontinue anyway. But that's the problem I have. The stuff guaranteed works for me

Man, don't risk your health for hair!!

I know it sucks - we all are vain here. But you still gotta try to focus on what matters most and that's, hands down, your health. Brain fog and fatigue alone are ruining life!

At least come off it for now and make sure that your body recovers properly. If you are THAT vein - go back on after a little while.

The same thing happened to me with finasteride. I kept on getting nasty side effects so i would quit, but one bad reflection in a mirror and i crumbled; headed to the bathroom with a glass of water and got back on it. I recovered every time i came off it fine - within 3 days i was like a new man. I eventually quit for good when a doctor gave me a stern warning about anti androgens after questioning me on my hair loss.

Guess what sort of problems i have now at 20 years old?

. Complete impotence
. Penile shrinkage and skin changes
. Prostatitis (diagnosed)
. Poor thyroid functioning (diagnosed)
. Sleep disturbances (waiting on sleep study)

I haven't touched finasteride in nearly two years. I have literally found myself pushing a girl away from my flaccid penis while she rubs on my shaven head in bed. Ironic isn't it?

Look, i thought my life was over when i started rapidly balding but it was just a bad period - probably like every young guy goes through when they lose their hair. The minute i found the right course at university, found new friends and just started living, i didn't care a single bit. Because of the issues finasteride has left me with, as positive as i try to be - there is no doubt that my quality of life is likely never to be the same. I am in debt because of all the meds (v****) i have bought. I have flunked university due to anxiety/ panic attacks and the need to run away from my friends asking why i didn't just f*** the girl that approached me in a club.

I am scheduled for an appointment with a urologist next month, which means another injection into my penis and cringeworthy discussions about my non existent sexuality. I will probably be offered some more v**** and an anti depressant, go home and wonder whether it's time to call it quits on life.

You do not want to end up like this BELIEVE ME!

Do you have name brand dutasteride, or a generic? If sides go away then you might try getting a generic hard tablet form of dutasteride and quartering it. Quarter it and take .125mg every day, then skip the 4th day.

Studies show that even .1mg of dutasteride is more effective than 5mg of finasteride, so it might be worth a try.

But, as Joe said, it's better to be bald and have your dick functional than to have hair and no desire to get laid. I suggest waiting to see if sides subdue, and there's an excellent chance that they will.

Joe - Your story frightens me. Sorry to hear that. Trust me, this $hit gets me down too. How long have you completely been off of finasteride now? You stated that you would go off and go back on, and everytime you went off, your sides went away

Rawtashk - I'm using Avodart, which does kinda suck, because if you've seen it before, it comes in a gel capsule. Almost impossible to cut into pieces. I don't have a connection on any generic stuff or I would try a lower dose

I just don't understand knowing that dutasteride works so well, why can't there be a company that can make it into a shampoo or leave in conditioner? It's frustrating seeing others with perfect hairlines with the same amount of DHT in their system as me, yet people like us have to potentially 'f' up our hormones to keep our hair in check..So messed up

I don't have the link in front of me...but someone on another hairloss forum did blood tests before he started experimenting with topical finasteride (don't remember how he mixed it up). He then took bloods after 6 months (or so) on finasteride. Turns out his DHT was still about 60% lower than when he started.

Basically...finasteride still gets absorbed to a great deal when used topically.

I have been off the drug for 20 months now. My condition is actually worse now than ever. I can literally go weeks without experiencing a single erection, whereas before there was at least some life down there.

I went on and off the drug a number of times in the space of 5 months when i first discovered finasteride and like i said, i quit and would return to normal within days. I wish i knew why i crashed the last time i used it. It was 4 weeks after i quit.

I am not alone - propeciahelp.com has over 2000 members and new guys are signing up everyday. There are now 5 university institutions researching persistent side effects.

Rawtashk is right, topical preparations are absorbed into the bloodstream just as well as oral administration. You never know though, maybe it's worth a try.

Good luck with whatever you choose mate.

I'm sorry to ask a douchey question could you please clarify this for us:

This implies you still get the odd erection whereas a few posts above it you said:

Sorry to ask, I realise it's shitty either way. :/

Ok, we will call it 'severe erectile dysfunction'. Plus absolutely no sex drive, penile shrinkage and skin changes.

The 0 libido is probably the worst. I can watch pornography or have a girl naked in bed trying to suck my c*** = nothing.

Every human is different.I have experience with dutasteride,6 month,no side effects, great sex drive great erection...didnt saw any really great results got back on finasteride, now hair looks bad because i changed finasterid, for the reason that there is no Proscar (propecia) in Bulgaria anymore, and i changed the drug... its now yellow pills, not blue like before and i am 100% sure that this drug is fake, last 6 months i had bad shedding, and hair looks like ****...so if this finasteride is fake,so i was only on minoxidil than...and i can say minoxidil alone SUCKS...finasteride alone SUCKS...thats for me,not for all.I stopped minoxidil, and my hair got bad,i stopped finasteride and hair got bad...so i dont know what exactly is going on but these 2 drugs should be together,so i hope that if that finasteride was fake, the result i will get from duta now should be really good...

OP unfortunately its very difficult to have any idea what is going on with your situation because you are not in a controlled environment. I personally believe that 80% of the threads online talking about results, sides, this, that are all nonsense and people are deluding themselves one way or another.

So after 11 months of nothing on finasteride, dutasteride transformed your hair in a single month did it? I highly doubt it. If anything the finasteride finally started to show its effects. You are supposed to give it at least a year after all. But as I say, its impossible to have any idea what is going on with you because you are not in a controlled environment and you are not being observed by an impartial, emotionally detached, qualified observer.

Guys i have just read something that bothers me a lot... what you guys know about Dutasteride - does it really increase the risk of high-grade cancer,or not? My english is not very good, but can you please check this link and read all the stuff :

http://www.fda.gov/drugs/drugsafety/ucm258314.htm

and tell me does it increase the risk of cancer or not?

In one article : "Be aware that 5-ARIs may increase the risk of high-grade prostate cancer."

In the other article -
http://www.fda.gov/Drugs/DrugSafety/ucm258358.htm

"Q6. Does FDA believe the benefits of 5-alpha reductase inhibitors (5-ARIs) still outweigh their risks for the approved indications?A. Yes. FDA believes that 5-ARIs remain safe and effective for their approved indications."

WTF? Someone with better english, please explain ?

They will lower the risk of more common, low-grade prostate cancer. However, they will increase the risk of a less common, high-grade prostate cancer. The risk of high-grade prostate cancer is not high to begin with so the use is not contraindicated.
