Guys,

I use T-gel and Nizoral, but my scalp is still dry and I still see flakes. I think the hot water in the shower is causing them, or maybe it's the minoxidil. I maily have the dry scalp skin during the day, so it's prob from my morning pre-work shower. Is there anything I can apply to my scalp right after the shower than will keep my scalp in good health and not greasen up my hair? Thanks.

How often do you use Nizoral?

Do you shampoo twice per day?

You could try water rinsing instead of shampooing once in a while. Shampooing twice per day could be an overkill for some types of skin.

Try not to use hot water on your head, as it rips off all oils. If you enjoy hot showers, use lukewarm water on your head and save the hot lava for the rest. One way of determining proper temp is first testing water on your face. If it feels ok there, use it on your scalp too. Scalp seems to tolerate higher temps but it is nevertheless a sensitive portion of your skin.

Try finishing your showers with a blast of cold water on your head for some secs. It could help.

I found that olive oil helped my iching/irritation very much but that is quite an eccentric approach.

I do sometimes wash my hair 2x a day. It seems to get kinda greasy as the day wears on and it feels so much better after it is cleaned. I guess I'll try using colder water when I wash my hair. Any other thoughts guys?

zackb, how long have you been on Minoxidil? Less than 3 or 4 months?

It's common to get some flaking in the first months of minoxidil use. It usually goes away with time, and with use of a good medicated shampoo such as Nizoral.

It feels better because of the hydration that the shower offers you- and because it possibly makes your hair look thicker.

But after a while I am sure that you feel your skin drying and itching despite being clean as the water leaves your scalp. Your skin needs oil to some extent. Oil provides permanent hydration.

Try not to shampoo twice daily, at least until your scalp balances a bit.

....

I have been on Propecia and minoxidil for years now...many years. My skin is always dry, so I will assume it's the water. I just wish ther was some moisturizer I could put on my scalp after the shower that wouldn't make my hair look greasy.
