Does Propecia (finasteride) ever just stop working after a while?

Yeah, does propecia ever not work after a while? I was told that if you stop using the drug, your hair loss will continue. But I havent' heard anything about the drug ceasing to do its job. i'd like to know about this if anyone has any stories.

If you look at the haircount charts from the study, propecia doesn't just suddenly stop working, but the haircounts, after initially rising in the first two years, tend to very gradually diminish, but the average count was still well above the baseline, even after five years. Propecia isn't a cure, and even if you're an excellent responder, you'll probably eventually lose hair on it. But if it works for you, it will probably buy you a lot of time before you noticeably degrade from where you are at the peak of your results.

It never stops inhibiting DHT, but for whatever reason, the effectiveness can wear out. There are a great number of theories as to why this happens.

The longest time someone had and still has success with propecia is 7 1/2 years, I've read this on another forum.

Thats fairly close to as long as it's been used as a hairloss treatment, I think. I'm pretty sure propecia was approved in 1997 or 1998. People used proscar a bit before that though.

Propecia inhibits one type of alpha-5 reductase enzyme BUT NOT THE OTHER type of alpha-5 reductase enzymes. There are two present in our body. Dutasteride inhibits both and blocks over 90% of DHT formation. Propecia blocks approximately 65% of DHT formation.

So gents, if youre on propecia, you are still making 35% of your regular amount of DHT which is attatching and invading follicle root's androgen receptors ever so slowly. Propecia's clinical trials showed a per inch increase in hair counts for 4 years. The 5th year was a stabilizing year. There is a slight reduction in hairs per square in every year thereafter. Most men are back where they started in about 12-14 years if they use proscar/propecia ALONE. Using it with minoxidil really helps its effectiveness.

Use the big 3 boys. Best we have for now.

There is not much evidence suggesting Type I 5-AR contributes significantly to hair loss, as shown in the Dominican hermaphrodites study decades ago. Do you have any proof otherwise?

Old Spencer Kobren must've been on it for quite a while now.

Apparently he has maintained a NW2 for years and years.

9 years on Propecia

I begain taking, (what was then called proscar, and distributed in .5mg tab) nine years ago. For the first 7 years, it significantly slowed down my hair loss. Only the past two years have I been losing more than retaining (all I ever did). I am ordering dutasteride tonight.

Wow 12 years would be great! If I still had this thinning mop @41 I would be quite happy. If I still have it in a year I would also be quite happy :)
