Does hair thinning on top of head definitely = male pattern baldness?

If the back and sides are still thick, then yes.
*sigh* always thought that my hair loss is due to stress as i've been suffering from quite an amount of stress over the years..... the hair shedding just occurred suddenly for a period of time and now it stopped..... but left a bald patch on the top.... :sobbing:
male pattern baldness does not run in my family though............ My dad's side have good hair genes and all of them have head full of hair. Even my grandma passed away with a full head of hair. My mum's side have generally thin hair but none of them suffered from hair loss until after 60..... WHY DO I HAVE male pattern baldness since I always thought it's a genetic thing.

If it looks like male pattern baldness then it probably is. If you're losing hair all over your head, it may be telogen effluvium if you are under extreme stress. Most people pray it's just telogen effluvium and that they will recover. But if you're losing hair in the typical male pattern baldness pattern, with the back and sides horse shoe remaining thick and intact but frontal and temporal recession and/or crown thinning... Then that's male pattern baldness.
My dad was an NW2 at 40. His dad is an NW1 at 88. I was NW3V at 26. You lost the genetic lottery, just like the rest of male pattern baldness sufferers. It sucks, you need to treat it or accept it and shave.

Genetic hair loss can happen all over the scalp which is known as DUPA (diffused unpatterned alopecia), but that is uncommon. If hair loss is on the top of the scalp with the back and sides of the head unaffected then it's traditional patterned baldness. Briena, not having any known family history of hair loss doesn't mean you're exempt from experiencing it. Unfortunately, no one is safe from hair loss.

I went through some old posts and saw that you have retrograde alopecia. Have you had success in treating it? Will my nape ever stop receding or will it eat up all my donor hair? Thanks for any response.

I've been applying Minoxidil to the hair behind my ears and nape for a little while and it's helped. It's hard to tell how bad your hair loss could get on your nape, it depends on genetics really.
