Does Everyone Actually Experience Sides On Finasteride?

With the reduction in serum DHT is it more likely that everyone experiences a decline in the areas considered sides? Is it just a matter being able to chemically and mentally tolerate that decline?

Is the impact greater or less with age?

I can only speak for myself, but I am in my late 40's and started finasteride about 3 months ago.

I had some minor sides... just a slightly noticeable increase in the amount of stimulation needed to get a woody, but it wasn't a show stopper. At about my second month it felt like there was a few weeks or so where there was a reversal and I was waking up with woodies regularly. But now, I feel like things are back to baseline.

Just MY anecdotal input, but to me, the general impression I felt was that there was an initial impact, but after a few months things just seemed to "rebalance" themselves.

I'm a 7th year on fina ( started when I was 21 ). The only side effect I had is my balls hurt sometimes, but it's rare and I'm not really sure it's from propecia.

I feel like I might:

A. regret not getting on sooner.
B. never get in but have confidence in the decision for my long term health and quality of life.

Either way I could have saved a giant bag of hair if I would have not listened to the false promises of Telogen Effluvium from the dermatologist.

Is this fast diffuse loss anywhere near normal at age 39? I mean it was so slick less than two years ago that I had a hard time wearing caps.

Photo from October 2015 to today. With crazy diffuse thinning on the crown.

I think you said it well, everyone will chemically and mentally tolerate the decline differently. I started almost a year and half a go, when i first started, I had no sides until month three, month three I experienced breast tenderness, painful erection and watery semen, all of these sides went away at about month five. Weird thing is, I just recently got off finasteride and all of those same sides came back for about a week or two when i stopped, and I also broke out with acne very bad on my forehead which hadn't happened since I started finasteride. Bottom line is, altering androgens are going to effect some people adversely, its ignorant and naive to say that it can't or won't.

What was your shed experience and what lead you to get of the Finasteride?

I’m not afraid to try it. I am afraid to try it, shed, find out I have sides and be much worse off than I am now.

I can understand your concern. You definitely have a tough decision to make. I was in your exact shoes as I have told you before in your other threads. Unfortunately, I did shed, had some sides( not enough to quit) and went below baseline. You have to also realize some men do start to diffuse around age 40 and it continues like that for the rest of their life but hopefully very slowly. You still have great hair for your age so keep that in mind.

Appreciate the honest answer. I think I’m going to start this week, after a new round of labs.

The dermatologist is also offering a start on Avodart instead of the Finasteride. Could this be a better option that just hasn’t been as widely used?

From your experience was there a change in the quality of the hair? Just trying to set realistic expectations.

I think with the amount of hair you have for your age, I don't think starting with the strongest is best in your situation as I got more sides with Avodart when I only took it once per week. I would start with finasteride and see how you do. You have to understand you are going to be 40. Your hair in the next decade or two will change do to that as well.

I had fast diffuse loss at 40, jumped on Propecia and it saved my ***.

I've been on it since 2012, no side effects at all. I'm 46. My hair colour improved too.
