my entire family, including myself have diffused loss. the end result is exactly what you would think - fifty strands of hair on top. Good luck with that.

That sucks. But couldn't it be that different genetic (diffuse) patterns are different? Your family might have 50 strands left but someone else's has 5000 or whatever. Lots of dudes thin on top but still have the illusion of coverage into their 50s and 60s. And the thinning is clearly male pattern baldness related, they are too young for senile alopecia and the safe zones are still markedly thicker...?

I'm going to be 38 this year and still have the illusion of pretty much full coverage when grown out to about 1/2 inch or a little longer. I just wonder if diffuse loss is going to lead to slick or near slick (as you describe buckthorn) for everybody.

It's real simple - wet your hair, and stand under direct over head lighting

That will give you a strong indication of your pattern at the moment.

Miniaturization always leads to BALD, unless the hair in surrounding areas is other wise terminal. Even then, terminal follicles can turn into vellus hair as the balding gene progresses.

not all male pattern baldness leads to slick baldness. that's why it's better to call it male pattern hair loss. sometimes you recede to a nw3 and just stabilize.

Cope :D

if you are in your twenties with a NW3, then the probability of being bald in your forties, and fifties is highly in your favor. (without medication)

If you aren't then the hair will be ratty, diffuse and comparable to the fluffy hair on your ***.
