Happle & Hoffmann (my favorite hairloss researchers) found in a study a few years ago that androgenic stimulation (in the form of testosterone) stimulated mRNA growth of the type 2 form of the enzyme, but had no significant effect on type 1.

Can a gland be sensitive like an androgen receptor is sensitive to DHT? :dunno:

Meaning....? :dunno:

By the way, everybody should know by now that sebaceous glands are rich in 5a-reductase type 1, which is why finasteride has no effect on sebum production.

Well, the reason why I asked is because they referenced it in the abstract I provided above....("sebaceous gland is either exquisitely sensitive to DHT")

In regards to everybody knowing that the sebaceous gland is 5-ar type I rich.....

The study was done by:

SourceDepartment of Medicine, Cornell University Medical College, New York, New York 10021.

guess they were not told.

They weren't told in 1993, when that study first came out. Now everybody should know that sebaceous glands contain 5a-reductase type 1, without having to be told! :)

It implys that anything that increase the production of androgen or increased the sensitivity of the receptor will cause more hair loss and sebum secretion.

So taking finasteride a one solution, may be there are other solution.

Like is there life style that will affect androgen production.

Eating bad, not enough sleep, sexual activity or somethings else.

No one know for sure.

too sad

Bryan...you seem very knowledgeable on hair loss. Can i ask....what is your stance on the safety of finasteride for a guy in his 20's? I'm considering taking 0.25mg to see how i get on as i have a receded hairline and diffuse thinning at the crown. My other option is to shave and try to accept it as minoxidil did nothing for me and I don't want to be spraying my hair forever.

The issue of side effects from finasteride is a very hot topic nowadays on sites like this. Whether or not such issues are real (like the supposed occurrence of "permanent" side effects from its use), I really have no idea. That's why I don't normally talk about such issues.
