I saw a Doctor about my depression and hairloss a few months ago and he prescribed me some anti-depresants. I then asked if there is anything I can do about my hair and he said that i've got male pattern baldness and there is nothing to treat my baldness. I then said that noone in family is bald and he just shugged his shoulders as to say there is nothing you can do about it. Then the other day I saw a different Doctor and he just said that its all about being a man and I said but how comes noone in my family is bald and again he just didn't wanna know. I then mentioned propecia to him and if he could prescibe it and he said that he had never heard of it! Its like doctors just don't give a flying f*** about male pattern baldness and that you should just accept it. The doctors attitude is that if its not affecting you physically then you should just accept it :jackit:

The other day I heard some girl have a beast operation because she was flat chested and it was done on the nhs. So its ok for them to pay a girl to get her tits done but a young man with male pattern baldness should just learn to accept it :jackit:

I do know what you mean.

1 Doctor told me there was nothing you can do. He actually seemed a bit pissed off I'd wasted his time to ask about baldness.

Another Doctor vaguely said 'There are treatments, but of limited affect which you'd be on for life and not availible on the NHS' I then asked if I should go to a private clinic and he said 'Absolutely not, you've got far better things to spend your money on'. Then went on to say that it's fashionable for shaved heads these days, it's not the 70s where everyone had long hair and it's easier in today's society to be bald (He was balding himself). However this helped me. It sort of hit home I should just accept it, and I'm well on my way to doing that and happy.

Yeah... If a doctor thinks that being flat chested becomes a psychological issue to an extent that it starts effecting the mental health of a patient, then the NHS pays for it. However, a normal person would have to pay for it.

One of the girls I went to school with became a doctor, and she got a free nose job recently. I bet she faked a few papers to push her operation through.

I'd imagine hair transplant's aren't availible on the NHS as unlike breast implants, which are fairly standard and risk free procedures, hair transplant results can fairly enormously and require more specialised surgeons.

The majority of people in UK pay for their prescriptions anyway, so it's not like not having Propecia on the NHS makes too much of a difference.

not really... You pay a flat fee independent of what the medicine is, which can be really expensive in some cases.

NHS prescription is £6.50 or something, whereas a propecia prescription for 3 months is more like £90.

What I mean is that, you don't really pay the true cost of the prescription.

What you're saying is correct. What I meant was the different in price between those who buy generics online and a prescipton. (Of course it would be better to buy from brand name propecia from a pharmacy, just for peace of mind)

male pattern baldness is really one of those things where guys on forums like this one know more about it than most doctors.

My Doctor said the exact same thing : You are going bald and there's nothing i can do.

Baldness is not an illness so there's no real need for Dr's to study it.
And there's a prejudice between attitudes about male and female cosmetic procedures.
I suppose the male equivilent of a breast job is a penis enlargment and I dont think that they do them on the NHS.

The public opinion on M.P.B is you're just supposed to take it like a man. :smack:

What kind of doctors do you guys have? The both doctors I've visited knew about finasteride and minoxidil, no problem. And the other one wasn't even a derm!

I bet the NHS does micropenis enlargements? Obviously there is a big difference between correction operation, and enhancement operation. I don't mind my tax money being used for the former, but the latter is just not needed. Seeing a shrink is cheaper, and I'm a tight bastard

If any lurkers read this message, trust me, do NOT waste your time going to ANY doctor about your hair. You are wasting money. I learned the hardway. If you want propecia, order it online. If you want information about hair loss, go to these boards. You learn more about hair loss in these places than from any doctor. The majority don't care, are clueless and will take their 100 dollar cut after seeing you for 10 seconds.

Awful advice.

If you want to be sure to have legit true drugs you need a legit prescription and to purchase it from a pharmacy. Buying online is unsafe. Generic proscar can be had cheaply with a prescription.

Generics work well for many in the UK though. I've had good results on Finpecia - glad I didn't shell out for a finasteride prescription ...

My doctor got minoxidil and finasteride mixed up. All he had to say about any of it was that finasteride had to be applied topically to your head daily, and that if you weren't careful you'd end up with hairs on your face. Heh.

Agreed.

First doctor I saw for hair loss told me Propecia was extremely dangerous, and to stop using Nizoral because it CAUSED hair loss. Oh yeah, did I mention he was a young bald doctor?

Most derms have only elementary knowledge of hair loss. They mainly exist to treat old people w/ skin cancer.

Cassin, if you think I can get sued for posting this, please delete it for me:

$49 prescriptions for most safe cosmetic pills, including avodart and proscar and propecia. Jayman got a prescription for Avodart and got it filled at Walmart. Costs him $100 per month for avodart, but it is real. Prescription good for 6 months.

Warning: get your blood levels tested for estrogen. If they are high, you might be at risk for gyno. Do not take if you have breast cancer. If you are fat, get your liver tested. Long term effects of avodart unknown, but it is super powerful and affects DHT made everywhere in the body.

Very true. Only the very best cosmetic surgeons know anything about skin. A lot just buy a laser and use it without understanding it though.

If you need blood tests done, you can order a lot of them online. Just see a doctor to make sure you are not forgetting anything. Might be something you don't know. Docs are good for making sure you don't leave anything out. Just get the tests you want first, then tell them the results at the visit and see what else they say you should do, if you are really worried.
