Hello everyone, my name is Chris I am 22 years old and suffering from hair loss.

Today I just got prescribed finasteride 5mg and will be splitting it into 1/4ths for 1.25mg daily. In addition I will be using Nizoral 1% to wash my hair with about 3 times a week.

Anyways both sides of the family have an issue with hair loss but mine is beginning much earlier than most. The problem is most severe on the crown/vertex of my scalp. It seems like ive lost so much hair and that perhaps im starting to late to save that area.

Wonder if I will have any success.

No one can actually tell you if it will work. Both propecia (1mg finasteride) as well as minoxidil respond very well to the crown of the head.

Just try it.

Good luck.

Give it at least 12 months though.

agreed

you need to give it a year to see results

look at SE-freak's story

your young so you have youth on your side

I'm torn whether or not to suggest minoxidil
i know it would help especially in the crown
but it is another expense and regiment to add

IMO if I were you I would add minoxidil
i was thinning in my crown, but not as much as you

maybe you could try liquid minoxidil only at night
thats cheap and easy to use at night

minoxidil/finasteride are doing their magic for me

Well my physician said to just stick with finasteride initially, and if there was no improvement after about 8 months then to consider adding rogaine as well. Because if you start with both finasteride and rogaine you and see improvement you have no way of telling if the success was caused by one or both. What do you guys think, should I add minoxidil as well? I already have a 6 month supply of it I could continue using it, since the rash I talked about earlier seemed to be an isolated incident.

Also BodyDysmorphic minoxidil states you must use it twice a day not just at night for it to be effective. Can you use it once a day and have it remain effective?

And SE-freak's results were very impressive.

Give it at least one year or more. You probably know that the younger the age at which your hair loss begins, the more likely your hair loss will be extensive.

do whatever you want

some people on this site only use minoxidil once a day and get results
you are correct however, twice a day is recomended

i think in your case i would go big three
using minoxidil twice a day
these are just my opinions

Nizoral shampoo.

I'd go with the foam version of rogaine first and see how it goes for the next 3 months. Keep taking pics like the first one.

Well my hair is diffused thinning everywhere except the crown where its the worst, but every where else its acceptable. But I guess im one of the worst cases here judging by some reactions.

Also how many times a week should I use nizoral 1% shampoo?

2-4 times a week.

Get on rogaine too if you want some regrowth.

Well I thought finasteride has the potential to help with regrowth in the vertex/crown specifically. If so wouldnt that be overkill? That way I can see if finasteride 1mg alone is enough to improve my condition.

I would just stick with the finasteride/nizoral for a year or so and see how it goes. It can definitely give you regrowth, but it also might not, you never know, just gotta stick it out. Stay with what your doctor said.

Well worse case scenario if finasteride is able to maintain your current hair, while decreasing the amount that sheds everyday, wouldn't that in effect create the appearance of thicker hair?

Hi cmf, my hair loss seems to be similar to yours, my crown area is similar but as my hairs longer the size of the thinning patch looks smaller, I've been on finasteride for 9 months and it's looking better, a lot of people see best results 12-16 months so I'm giving it some more time.

I'd advise stick on finasteride for awhile, I might test minoxidil on a small patch of my hairline to see how it reacts, personally I don't think you should jump on minoxidil because it seems to have negative results on some people. Maybe test it on one side of your hairline like me? I have some diffuse all over the top of my head but worse round the back, hairline isn't terrible but is visibly thinning out =[

Also, I dropped nizoral as it was making my scalp worse not better, but try it out I guess.

How noticeable were the improvements at 3 months for you?

finasteride has the potential to work best in the crown area. I think you will be one happy dude by the end of one year. Good luck with your treatments.
