It depends on the cause of the diffuse hair loss. If the diffuse balding is telogen effluvium, then you may get all your hair back (depending on the cause of the T.E.) If, on the other hand, the diffuse thinning is male pattern baldness, then the answer is that you are bound to lose hair.

That is why it is important to see a doctor or dermatoligist to get your hair loss diagnosed: so you can choose an appropriate treatment. male pattern baldness presents in some people as diffuse thinning.

For male pattern baldness

some people will have a combinatin of diffuse+ total loss while others will have a few loss and the rest is diffuse.

For most people it starts as a loss at the temples and then it takes on a permanent patern. It is this permanent pattern u should be concerned of. If u completed your temple recede and having a diffuse pattern with t e hairline intact (less dense or having shorter thinner hairs) u may take long to go totally bald provided the hairs get replaced all the time but with miniaturisation. Some may small vertex loss. Usually this type of hairloss can be predicted for a short term. usually propecia works best for these type of hair loss

if u have a pattern where u have progressive recede (loss of hair in a receding pattern), u may go bald early and faster depending on the rate and severity.Usually this sort of loss doesn have hairs replaced, just like the temples. This is sort of predictable since the hairs dont get replaced resulting in permanent loss. In these cases, the loss of the front is enough for the cosmetic damage. U dont have to wait for the full effect. U should be thanking that full baldness may occur fast if u think that is destined for you.since u dont need to shave your head

In anther way if it stops at the front. count yrself lucky as there is hair transplant to regain ground. This is the advantage of this type of hair loss compared to diffuse.
.
THis is IMO.
