Different kinds of flakes?

I think I remember reading somewhere that there were different kind of flakes: the large sebum flakes that are usually associated with some kind of fungus or hormonal changes, and then little tiny flakes (more like white dots) were associated with dry skin.

Does anyone know anything about this? I read something on this probably by Googling but it was a long time ago and I can't find anything on it now. Most of my flaking has cut down alot, tremendously, actually. I no longer ever get "big" flakes on my scalp, but I still get, although not nearly as much as I used to, tiny dust-sized flakes. Is this probably from dry skin? Any suggestions would be awesome.
