i'm 21 years young and wanted to know..How does one diagnose male pattern baldness. Any tests i can get done myself through labs to confirm it? for instance i've taken the TSH, T3 and T4 for thyroid and those were clear. But i still cant tell whether my hairloss is due to male pattern baldness or stress or whether its normal. I have been losing hair since 4 years now, clogging the sink all the time. My temple area has receded somewhat with the 'horn like' appearance but my right temple has receded slightly more than the left. Then again people say most people experiance some recession or more and i've noticed quite a few people with "M" shape foreheads who arent bald but thats just how their forehead develops in time. i'm probably a Norwood-1 with just the temples receded, my hairline is holding up even after losing hair for 4 years. parents have fine hair.grandparents had hair. only one uncle from mothers side is bald.

these days i'm losing upto 30 strands a day. i seem to be losing more 'short hair than long. and thinning is more in the front than vertex or sides. its just the frontal thinning and the temples that is bothering me. Is there any test i can get done to confirm i have male pattern baldness? i suffer from alot of everyday stress as well.

thyroid test was normal.

have very dry and frizzy hair so when its not wet its impossible to tell i have hairloss, i get a sort of afro.

how do i diagnose myself?

been taking centrum since a while so i doubt its a vitamin deficiency? what hormone tests are you supposed to get done? if i get a bloodtest for DHT done? is there a specific level of DHT that i should compare with? and if so what?

any feedback would be really appreciated.

thanx

I'm not an expert but as far as I know, the diagnosis for male pattern baldness is made by exclusion.

Everyone goes bald, so if you are losing hair in the typical areas (which you say you are) it is male pattern baldness unless proven to be different.

So to summarize:

1) "these days i'm losing upto 30 strands a day". This means nothing, everyone loses hair every day.

2) "Is there any test i can get done to confirm i have male pattern baldness?". I don't think so.

3) "My temple area has receded somewhat with the 'horn like' appearance but my right temple has receded slightly more than the left". This sounds exactly like male pattern baldness.

this sucks :(..thought male pattern baldness was hereditary only. wouldnt it affect my elder brother too? i'm 21 and its affected me and hes 27 and hes all ok..

i so did not wanna start medication for this...the big three and their side effects, lifelong commitment and disappointments. I wonder if homeopathic medicine is any good.

why am i losing small hair? isnt that hair thats growing? and why doesnt it grow fully before falling out..its not even that the small hair that fall out are weak or anything, they're fine yet they shed.

what is procerin? i hear compared to the 'big 3' it has the least side effects and is effective.

gonnna look incredibly ugly bald!...sigh..

male pattern baldness is hereditary, your brother simply has not inherited it.

The side effects are rare.

Any dissapointment will be with your male pattern baldness, try not to blame the drugs like many do here, you will lose perspective and eventually hair.

I wonder if rubbing apples into my hair will heal a broken leg.

You don't have to take the big three try just finasteride and maybe if your scalp gives you problems nizoral as well.

muchos gracias...will try finasteride and nizoral..

btw tyran amigo..homeopathic medicine isnt something to be scoffed at, has been proven to treat even blood cancer. its just more of the same thing you have to cure it. snake poision used in anti venom etc. just wasnt sure whether it'd be effective when it came to male pattern baldness. i had a sweaty palms condition, cured that as well. friends dad had a very bad spine problem, cured that.

should i start with a low dosage of finasteride ? propecia or proscar?

btw..have any of you heard of this hair replacement technique where they attach a membrane to your skin. its permanent, can be used while swimming , in the wind and does not need as high a maintenance as wigs, the local hairclub here is offering it, gonna check up on it.
