Dermatologists take on Proscar

I am a student at Michigan State and after asking for a prescription of Proscar received it from a local doctor. When I went to visit my dermatologist in my hometown and told him i was prescribed Proscar he was concerned. He said he would never prescribe it to me. He made the following analogy about Proscar compared to Propecia: It's like him making an apple pie and a master chef making an apple pie. Although the ingredients are the same the Master Chef's pie is going to taste better. He says that although the same active ingredients are the same proscar will be less effective and is unproven to fight hairloss.

I have been on Proscar for over a month now (I was on Propecia for three months prior) and have noticed my sexual side effects (limp dick) have gone away. This makes me extremely happy, but also worries me that the Proscar is ineffective. Anyone have a take on this?[/b]

His analogy fails because the master chef (Merck) is making both pies, propecia and proscar, he's makes none of them.

That story does nothing of changing my opinion of Doctors. What a knob. It does not need to be approved for hairloss as its the same drug. Guess i don't need to spell that out to my hairloss brethrens. :D

Heh.

I think a better analogy would be buying a whole pie and cutting it into slices yourself, or you buying individual slices of the same pie.

Interestingly enough when I went to my family Doctor. a few months back for a propecia renewal, she recommended proscar to save $. So I went for it. Then with all the articles and postings I've read over the past few months, I decided to play it safe and go back to propecia.

When I got it renewed, the first thing the pharmacist told me was, hey you should be using proscar and save $. I asked about the active incredient not being distributed evenly and he said that even if that was the case, it wouldn't make a difference in the long term.

He also mentioned that they're doing a study with taking 5mg just once a week for male pattern baldness instead of 1mg each day. Not sure if that's true or not ...

My pharmacist told me "hey, if you really want to save money on propecia, use apples"

Tommy2tyme! Long time, no post! How's the cherry-flavored finasteride water going? We thought you were dead! LOL

I nominated you for two awards while you were gone:
