I was involved in an accident about ten years ago. I wont get into specifics but it affected my reproductive system. Today I went for my anual check up and informed the doctor that my dermotoligist put me on finasteride a month ago. He said if I definitely want to have a family and kids get off the finasteride with my type of medical history. Man this sucks. I was starting to feel better about my hair loss too. Man this really sucks, but kids are more important than hair. Man can someone please give me some advice to keep my hair without affecting my reprodcutive system? Please. Thanks

Wait...what? What kind of medical history? Sounds like just a GP that read horror stories about finasteride and hasn't really studied it. I fail to see how damage to your reproductive system would in ANY WAY make finasteride somehow worse for you.

Explain, plz?

Basically I had an accident where only one of my testicles produces sperm. He said with only one fully working it would not be good to mess with a drug like that. He said if both were working properly it would be fine, but since one of them works he said stay away from it until after I have kids. He is the best rated fertility specialist in my area. He is an expert. Good news is my sperm is fine, bad news is I will go bald. I guess I will try minoxidil. ANyone know any alternatives? I will not mess with RU either.

Doesn't really make sense. Finasteride affects the prostate not the testicles, and shouldn't have any affect on fertility. Many men concieve children while taking finasteride and I don't see how having only one testicle would make any difference.

that's just my unprofessional opinion

HairLossTalk.com is, compared to some places at least, fairly pro-drugs when it comes to treatment... so you might get a little lopsided view of it here. but that aside, i'd say keep taking it, at least until going to see someone who is liable to actually have a clue. GPs in general (at least here in london) are renowned for being absolutely useless and scatterfire.

go to a specialist. hell - your derm is more likely to know. if it's his job sticking people on finasteride, he's bound to know a fair few patients who have been in a similar situation to yours.

Get off the stuff now, have your kid, then go back on it...

...your priorities are way off wack pal...besides, there are new things coming down the pipe that will help with hairloss BESIDES effin' finasteride!!

I did quit the stuff. That is what I said in my op that kids are more important. I was just venting how it sucks that I cannot take it no more. My priorities are not out of wack that is why I quit it. Hopefully something does come on. But i have been coming on these sites for 4 years and have seen nothing new. I hope it does though man.

there's never been any proof that using Finasteride while concieveing a child could lead to birth defects through semen transmission. It's one of those internet urban legends that the Propeciahelper types love to spread around to scare people

in any case that's a separate issue to the fact that you have only one working testicle. I'm baffled as to why your doctor would say that taking finasteride with two balls is fine, but not with only one ball.

Yeah quantum cat. I do not know, but he is a specialist in fertility. Has been practicing for 35 years. I may go get another opinion, but this has me spooked to take it at all. I thought it would be fine to take it just like you, but he said it is too risky. He even said that my other testicle grew to overcompensate for the damage done to the other one so it seems like it would be ok to take it, but I am not the one with the MD next to my name or the 30 years of practice. I am going to take his advice. I just wish I could hang on to these hairs thats left. I still may go get a second opinion though.

Sounds like ur Doctor thinks finasteride will reduce ur sperm count.

not sayin it will, just that i think thats his thinking behind it.

docs are just like us, some are for finasteride, some are against, some believe the hype about sides some dont.

id get a second opinion. The other thing u could do, would be to freeze sperm, before u go on finasteride, just to be safe. Lots of men do this before they get a vascectomy. just gives u more options if fertility becomes a problem down the line. If u do this, going on finasteride shouldnt be a problem.

btw is ur doctor bald? some have a thing against finasteride, like it wasnt around in time to help them, so they dont want anyone else getting it either.

just some thoughts.

Since you are so impudent and irresponsible, and you intend to spread your genetic defect to next generations, you should be either castrated or incapacitated.

that really was uncalled for. we all have some genetic imperfection, male pattern baldness is quite a minor one in the scheme of things.

Finasteride won't cause you to become infertile, your doctor probably sees it like this... Hair is for aesthetics and does nothing positive or negative for you so it's not even worth a 0.1% risk of taking a pill that has a 99.9% chance of not making you infertile because you may be one of the 0.01% that has his penis stop working somehow.

I see it as more of a possibility than a fact, you may as well keep taking the drug unless you spend your entire life worrying about your ceiling caving in and crushing you alive or having an earthquake split the earth from under you which causes you to take a lava bath at the earths core.

Yeah I can understand why doctors are reluctant to prescribe propecia. I mean a hormone altering pill to keep your hair? if your in good health is it worth the risk long term I bet a lot of doctors would advise against taking any drug if your healthy.
