Crown Thinning More As Of Lately. Feeling Discouraged.

Hello. I will start off by telling you about myself. My crown started thinning back around 2004 or so. I was about 20 at the time. My derm suggested I try propecia and I have been taking it ever since. I switched to generic form about 3 years ago. I also started using minoxidil about 10 years ago. I never really re-grew any hair. But I wasn't really losing any more either. This went on for many years. I mostly wear hats. I just like them. But when I would style my hair I'd use topix. Only took a little bit and once my hair was styled you could not tell my crown was thinning out or that I had a bald spot. The bald spot remained but it was not that bad. I could live with it. But starting thisspring till now it is a lot more noticeable. Thesurrounding hair use to cover and conceal thespot pretty good. Especially after using topix. I have never had any thinning or receding on thefront of my scalp. And other then the bald spot my hair is pretty thick. Which makes the spot stand out even more. It's just discouraging. I guess nothing last forever. But between the minoxidiland the finasteride I was holding on to what I had and was hoping I could do this for many more years. I recently started nizoral shampoo (started a week ago) I guess I should of started that earlier on. But I really never needed to. Also recently I was on the receiving end of a bad haircut which makes it even more noticible.

Never had any major sides from the propeica. So that was a plus.

My questions are what could of happened? I know it's not entirely possible to say. But just looking for suggestions. Did my body get use to the finasteride? Maybe it lost its effectiveness? Does it look like I am to far gone for the big 3 to work? On the Norwood what would I be? As I said my frontal hairline and the rest of my head is full and thick for now. I have not had any phases of shedding that were really notable until now. I do not have pics of before when the spot was less thin. But I am posting recent ones from today

I am 34 years old. I'm not ready to lose my hair. I am going to use the big 3 for the next year (and longer) and see if I can get back some of what was there not to long ago.

i originally posted this in "shedding, shedding, shedding. But I did not receive any replies. So I thought maybe I posted in the wrong forum. Sorry if I was wrong. I am new to the site.

dang, you have THICK hair everywhere else. get on finasteride and try to maintain and then get transplants to fill in the crown.

I've been on finasteride for many years. That's what I was explaining. I've been using that plus minoxidil for a long time. Only recently did my crown start to thin as bad as it has. Is there any chance that the big 3 can reverse this somewhat and that maybe I can fill this in a bit. When my hair grows longer on the top it kind of covers/conceals the spot fairly well. This time it was a bad haircut and the person who did it cut my hair shorter then I had ask. Now it really looks bad. But my crown has been thinning more as of this spring. I really don't have the money for a transplant. I was hoping I could save what I have or even grow some hair by adding nizoral to my regimen. I know it does not grow hair alone but combined with the finasteride Amd minoxidil maybe I have some hope?

not likely. you're a good transplant candidate though. fill in that crown and you're a full head.

i'm happy for you that it's stabilized at least.

Well it was stabilized for a long time. But as of recently it has started to thin a lot even though I have been taking finasteride and minoxidil for years. I don't understand why that stopped working. I've never really dealt with shedding in the past. This is the first time it's thinned out this much.

If you're willing to try dutasteride it may have a chance of thickening up your crown a bit.

Here's an interesting case of a 47 year old man who used finasteride for 4 years and initially had a good response, but later on started losing hair density. He then added 0.5mg of dutasteride once a week while still taking finasteride daily and got some regrowth after 3 months.

That is interesting. I guess it's something to think about. If I could afford a good transplant I'd go for it. Maybe down the road. Right now I just want to stop the thinning for as long as I can. It's irritating because it's one spot but it's so noticable. It would sure be nice if the big 3 could just fill it in even just a little bit. I know nothing but a transplant will bring it back to perfect. But I guess I'll just stop panicking and keep on my regamin and possibly add dutasteride and see where it takes me.
