Confusion over minoxidil

I am very new to this and I am still in the process of deciding which hair growth product to use. I have noticed my hair receding around the temples luckily noone has noticed due to me having a long floppy fringe. Im not gonna use fianide due to the side affects and I am thinking of using minoxidil as I have family members who have used it and have noticed regrowth in the space of 3-4 months. However the one thing I find confusing is that people on this board say they notice more shedding of hair when they apply minoxidil which I find baffling because minoxidil is supposed to have the reverse affect. Have people noticed increased hair loss as a result of using minoxidil or is it only after they have stopped using it and if so does anyone know the specific reason why this occurs?

The shed is a good thing. Usually when you start using minoxidil you will shed some hair and It may freak some people out but after a few months the hair that you shed will grow back. Actually, you will gain more hair that you had before.

how much hair on average would someone shed after using minoxidil, would it be similar to the amount of hair that you are already shedding or would it be significantly more than normal or somewhere inbetween?

most times it's a small increase in the number of the hairs that are falling everyday. If you don't count hairs you can't notice it. In some occasions it makes a difference in the look of your hair for a while. Every person reacts different. In most people it could be a 10-20% increase in the amount of shedding, but in a minority it could be 50%. But you don't know in which group you belong until you try.

I guess I must be some kind of freak because I've been using finasteride and minoxidil for many years (approx. 13 years) and I didn't experience any major shed.

some people do not experience shed while on minoxidil or finasteride or they do experience but it's so small that it's hard to notice.
