In january 2015, when i was about to turn 23, i had an itchy scalp, i went to a walk in clinic and the doctor whom i never visited before took an exceptionally quick look at my head and prescribed me finasteride. Been taking it ever since. At first it was no big deal, i never thought about my hair, but a few months after that i just started obssessing over it, could i really be going bald? i visited a several doctors since then, including my normal gp. All of them have said they see no balding whatsoever. Yet, i have been taking finasteride out of fear that its been keeping my hair, even though i feel like i have worsened to a great degree in terms of my hair since i started taking it. My last visit was to my new doctor who, when i asked for the script said it must be working. I told him i feel like my haiir has gotten worse since i started taking it and he told me if thats the case, then i shouldnt even need to be taking it. He said he sees no hair loss other than the normal maturation, he then showed me his head and said the same thing happoened to him at my age and his hair hasnt changed since. I cant stop thinking about it. whenever i ask my family or friends if it looks like im balding they always tell me that im not. but for some reason i just dont trust them cause i feel like they dont want me to feel bad. what i really want to know is whether the general public, when they see me, can notice im that im balding or not. Also should i sstart rogaine?

I’m gonna be honest I’m no expert so take everything I say with a grain of salt. I don’t think your balding. Here’s why you seem to have receded evenly. Also you don’t seem to have thinning anywhere. So I wouldn’t stress to much.

You have no balding. If this is because you were in the very early stages to begin with and Finasteride helped or you never had recession is anyone's guess. You can always stop the Finasteride and keep an eye on if it is the latter.

That is basically what the doctor said. i mean my hairline is definitely higher since starting finasteride. does this mean its essentially useless based on the studies

People are fallible in measuring things based on observation, especially when you are paying more attention to things/obsessing. We have many people swearing their hair looks so much worse on treatments but when they show before and after pictures they look the same or better.

This does not mean that hair lines don't recede on Finasteride, they do. Hair lines are complicated and seem to be also very dependent on the scalp developing. It seems to help more in terms of pregressively receding far back as opposed to just receding into a mature hair line.

Fair, thanks for your input. I am a hypochondriac to begin with and i know that. I am aware that what i see might be different than what others see, but this awareness hasn't prevented me from going a bit crazy sometimes. When i look at pics from when i was younger, my hair looks the same, but when i look in the mirror i find areas where my hair isnt growing, which makes me think i should use rogaine. I really dont want to use it but if people think i look like im balding i will. So you dont think i need to use rogaine?

I already said what I thought you should do. But I am not you, it is your choice. I recommend the foam if you are applt on the hair line.
