Concerned about thinning near temples, should I seek treatment?

Hello there,

I have been on here a few times as I monitor my hair situation pretty closely and have been for a while. Admittedly I have noticed a bit of a change since I was younger. I am 22 and will be 23 soon. I am not on anything at the moment but always wanted to at least try finasteride. During this time I have seen my Doctor a few times hoping she would send me to a derm to at least get an opinion but she has told me a few times I have nothing to worry about.

However after reading a bunch of things and looking at my family history (it's not ideal as my dad is bald and his brothers are as well) I am and have been concerned for a while.

Here is a photo of one side of my hair. The other is similar. Don't know why it's sideways sorry about that.

Anyways... any feedback would be awesome. My crown has always been okay, no huge concern there t least not right now... but yeah my temples definitely are the concern.

you could start take fun if you don't want to lose it because the hair on the temples doesn't really grow back after it's gone from what i've read, even with minoxidil.

Yeah, problem is my Doctor won't prescribe it to me lol which is frustrating. Thats why I am down to take it right now to prevent it from getting worse but I can't get a prescription right now.

Yep sucks *** if the doctor doesn't see blatant obvious balding no way in hell will he prescribe you finasteride and to see a derm you usually need a referral from your GP (i think, at least for me). My advice switch doctors or see if you can just go straight to a dermatologist. Even then the dermatologist might not give you a finasteride script.

Luckily the doctor I have currently is really cool and listens to what I have to say and same with my dermatologist (both women, if that has to do with anything).

If all that fails, go the online route you dont need a prescription.

Or you can take clippers to your head make a horseshoe and then ask your doctor lol.

Yeah my doctor actually happens to be a woman, and every time I have expressed my concern she says I am absolutely fine and that I don't need anything unless it gets really bad. I mean don't get me wrong I don't think I need a transplant or anything but based on history I definitely want to stop it from getting worse ASAP. It means a lot to me I don't want to recede.

Trust me I tried seeing a derm in my area (Canada) without a referral and I can't. I also tried buying online but it won't be sent to canada without a Doctor's referral as well so trust me lol I looked into a lot.

I likely will see my Doctor again or just try again to see a derm.

Your in a tough spot then. I'd advise jumping doctors until you get one that will fill in a script. Not sure if even saying your taking preventive measures to male pattern baldness will work in getting you a script.

As far as which side you get it on from your parents really doesn't matter you could get it from your moms side and be completely fine who knows. Your hair looks great as of now, only thing else I could think of besides jumping doctors is taking pictures of your hair every month or so and build up some proof to your doctor that things are changing in your hair.

Fair enough. Ill keep trying. I've let my hair grow sort of long just to see what it looks like. In all honesty yes I have noticed some differences. I always heard the myth you get it from your mom's side and it just so happens my mom's side is better... but I have learned not to go by that. Chances are I will recede later in my life but my main goal is to make sure it doesn't get nuts.

Thats a good idea though about the pictures. Im going to be persistent with her lol.

If you're really worried get rogaine no script but its more of a hassle

At this point you really need finasteride. Rogaine doesnt really stop it long term otherwise everyone would use that instead of finasteride. I know I would why mess with hormones if you dont have to

Great thanks for the feedback. I actually was able to get an appointment with a hair clinic/specialist. Hoping they can shed some light and background on what I need and hopefully they can lead me in the direction of finasteride. Regardless I will see what they say. Finally I will have some sort of help other than my Doctor tossing the idea aside telling me I am fine.

you can always get finasteride from alldaychemist - it comes generic from india and is pretty cheap, 5$ for 1 month supply+25$ shipping.

so 15$ 3month supply + 25 shipping = 40/3 = 13.33$ a month for finasteride, and I pay 10$ a month for generic finasteride with no insurance, so not a bad deal.

I don't see any hairloss, but you said you have balding in the family so do what you think is right

Honestly I think I pay so much attention to it that sometimes I get really paranoid and other times I look at it and figure it looks okay. But yes hairloss runs in the family so I mean it's certainly likely. I have a consultation with a specialist this Friday which is the first time I am going to be speaking to someone other than my stubborn doctor about it. I am excited to either start something to help or possibly be told I am okay for now and to wait it out.
