I've been on 1mg finasteride for 6 continuous years, it has definitely stopped further hair loss and I don't have any side effects to speak of.
My wife and I now want try for a baby and I am confused as to what I should do regarding taking finasteride.
I really don't want to lose anymore hair, if I lose anymore I'll have to shave my head which wouldn't suit me and the climate is cold in England which means I'll have to wear hats.
However the health of my future child is more important.
Is it ok to continue taking finasteride whilst trying for a baby? I'm strictly talking about birth defects and not fertility levels.
I have done some research and these are what various websites have said.
1. It is completely fine to conceive whilst the man is on finasteride and after conceiving you can continue to have unprotected sex.
2. It is completely fine to conceive whilst the man is on finasteride but he should wear a condom after the fetus has begun to form as small amounts of finasteride are found in sperm and this could cause genital birth defects in a male baby.
3. The man should stop taking finasteride before conceiving.
Which of these 3 statements is the closest to the truth.
I only want to stop taking finasteride if it is absolutely necessary.
