Chance of propecia working on frontal loss at early age...

I'm 21 and soon plan to start using propecia (proscar cut into 5ths or 6ths i decided). I have hairloss at the temples and front mainly, aswell as general thining over the top of my head. I do not plan to use minoxidil atleast not for the first 6 months, I want to see how a minoxidil-free regimen goes.

I will also be washing my hair in nizoral/t-gel couple of times a week and also plan to buy some folligen cream to apply four times a week.

I was wondering if anyone here who has started losing hair in the front/temple regions at such an early age as me has had any luck with propecia, and what the chances are it will work for me.

One thing I am worried about is everyone seems to experience hair loss at first which I'm really dreading!! I've lost alot of hair up front as it is. I will try get some pics up asap to show my hair.

Thanks guys

Suggest you not wait on the minoxidil. Without a growth stimulant, you will absolutely lose some more hair in the front which is likely not to be recovered once you do start minoxidil.

The rest of your routine seems fine. Folligen and minoxidil are the best chance for a saving your front hairline in my opinion, IF you are going the propecia route.

Good luck

I just noticed that I was going on and on with this post, but it has some good stuff in it, so it might help you out in some way.

Well I started thinning at 20 1/2 and think I can throw in a little information that you can use. Without even seeing what your hair looks like now I bet I know exactly what kind of hair loss you have and how much you have lost.

I first noticed that I was losing some hair when I noticed my temples were receding a little bit, upon futher inspection I could see that the crown of my head was also thinning. So about 3-4 months later and after making sure it was not just temporary I jumped on the Minoxidil 5%, about 2 more months later I started taking Propecia. After reading about Nizoral I decided to also start using it 4 times a week, but this was about 5-6 months after I started taking Propecia.

I am now coming up on my 1 year mark of Propecia in about a week from the looks of the almost empty bottle, at least a year and four months on 5% minoxidil and 7 months or so on Nizoral. From the experience I have had over the past 16 months there is one bit of advice I can't help but stress, and that is don't get your hopes up.

I will be the first to admit that I missed doses of both Propecia and Minoxidil all the time. I would say that 90% of the time I was on my game and took the Propecia everyday, applied the Minoxidil twice a day and used the shampoo a couple times a week. The only times I would miss the Propecia is if I was sick and taking a lot of flu and cold medication or it just slipped my mind all together, so out of a year I probably missed 20-30 doses at the most. With the minoxidil I kind of bounced around a bit. For like the first 4-6 months I hardly ever missed a dose, then I stopped using it for a couple of weeks due to health problems. Started back up again and continued on track for another couple of months until I started getting chest pains, so once again I stopped using it very often, probably once a day. Needless to say a few months down the road I quit it all together because it had been well over a year and I had nothing to show for using minoxidil so I quit for a month. More recently I have again started using it because at the point I am at now it could really not hurt my hairline. Out of the approx. 850 times I should have used Minoxidil I would have to go with 650 of times it was acctually applied. With the Nizoral I have never missed a dose and have probably done more than I needed to.

The point of all that is to be honest and show you that I have been taking the treatment long enough that I should be seeing results. The bad news though is that I have a lot less hair than I did the day I began treating my hair loss. While I have yet to really look at the Propecia study that was done I feel that if you are balding at an early age like we are Propecia and Minoxidil are not going to be the silver bullet you are hoping they will be. Because the younger you start losing your hair the more rapidly it will progress, and the stronger it seems to be. So while you are concidering waiting I would strongly suggest you start as quickly as you can. While my hair seems to of stopped falling out so rapidly it is much worse than it was when I started treatments, but the damage has already been done and I am not interested in keeping the scraps that are left behind.

Once again, please check to see if there are studies that answer your questions. Fortunately, there has been a "Propecia Frontal Hair Loss" study that shows hair counts in the frontal region.

Odelay -

Posts like yours fill this forum and frustrate the heck out of me and everyone who posts here.

You make the statement that "You've been on Propecia for a year and minoxidil for a year and four month"....

And then you tell the poor guy "Dont get your hopes up".

And then you do an "Oh by the way" ... and point out that you've totally not been sticking to your doses, you have missed nearly a month and a half of treatment days over the last 12 months, just stopped taking either Propecia or minoxidil for days or weeks on end at times, and admit that you've not used the treatments as directed.

Aside from all of this, you are pretty much claiming that the clinical data and MOUNTAINS of evidence to the contrary is just plain wrong, and you tell the guy not to get his hopes up that these treatments will work for him.

Please identify yourself as either 1) Someone who has not stuck to the regimen as directed and therefore may not be getting the results expected or 2) One of the 17% who just plain don't see results on these treatments. I have seen tons of guys photos on here and 90% of them who claim they're losing their hair aren't even losing it.

Could you please posts some baseline and 1 year photos to show us how bad your hair loss was and currently is? Thank you.

While I was a bit tired when I posted the first message you are reading it all wrong. If you read the information that is supplied with the Minoxidil you can clearly see that it says "You should begin to see results after 4 months." Considering I stayed on the stuff for 6 months Clearly proves that I have given it a chance to work properly. I just chose to be honest in my post stating that some nights I was too tired to apply the second dose, which in those first 6 months did not happen very often. Also during the entire time I have been on Propecia I Clearly stated that I "At most missed 20-30 doses." Now that is out of the 360 days I have been taking the drug and the longest I Ever went without taking it was 3 days in a row, which like I said was due to the fact I was taking a lot of Flu medications. Just because I missed a dose now and again DOES NOT void any results I had coming.

Back to the Minoxidil again, I even chose to give it another chance and tried it once again for the Required time line the people who sell the product have set. The Only reason I even stopped the second time was due the fact I was having chest pains, otherwise I would of stuck with it for another 6 months. Needless to say I gave Minoxidil 2 chances of the required amount of time and neither time Did I Ever see positive results. Are you implying that by missing a few doses here and there means you have go back to square one and voids any results that I might have had coming? If so not only does that contradict what the correct information is, it is also absurd.

LOL, this is hilarious. Were you reading the same post that I made? I NEVER SAID PROPECIA WAS BOGUS, like your are claiming I said. I NEVER CLAIMED THAT MINOXIDIL WAS BOGUS, like you are also claiming I said. If you read my post again you will see I am just stating how these products have done nothing for me and warning the guy, who is about the same age as I am, and is going through the Same thing I am, not to get his hopes up like I did. When I first started my treatments I had a decent head of hair with mild thinning on the top and recession at the front. I thought that by getting on Propecia and Minoxidil I would regrow a little on top and keep what I had, but I was wrong. I was also telling the guy that he should not wait to get on his treatments because people who start thinning earlier in life most likely have a more rapid form of hair loss, but you did not mention that.

"Aside from all of this, you are pretty much claiming that the clinical data and MOUNTAINS of evidence to the contrary is just plain wrong, and you tell the guy not to get his hopes up that these treatments will work for him."

Really I am curious where you reading my post? You should know that the treatments are not 100%, since both he and I are the about the same age it is reasonable to tell him that there is a possibility that it might not work for him. I did not know we only had to talk about the positive and never mention that there is a possibility the treatments might not work for him.

If it is not blatantly obvious by now, and you need verification to what I am claiming it is that "I Odelay, am one of the __% who... [do not] see results on these treatments."

Even though you asked sooooo nicely and were not being the slightest bit discourteous and putting words into my mouth I think I will Not post photos up, because it is so obvious I have lost hair over the last 1 year and change a blind man could tell the difference. So I don't need anyone’s approval that I am losing hair or for anyone to agree with me, because it is a fact.

No Thank You,

Odelay.
