Can seborrhea cause hair loss?

Hello!

For about 8 years I'm suffering from seborrhea. Sometimes seborrheic red spots appear on my head right in places where my hair fell out. I talk about my receded NW2 type temples (thanks for replies in my thread where I asked to determine my male pattern baldness stage :) ).

So I really worried – can seborrhea cause hair loss? I mean, it so strange that red spots appear exactly where my hair fell out or where hair is going to fall. I don't think that seborrheic spores are so smart to hit that symmetrically right in classic male pattern baldness bald spots, but why mine does?

Sorry for my bad English by the way (hello from frozen Moscow, Russia).

I'm no expert, but I have a similar condition and I notice that I have been losing hair in regions where I have an abundant amount of sebum. I have excessive sebum in the crown of my head and I have noticed that my hair follicles in that region has undergone miniturization. It also feels really itchy and every time I scratch it I get sebum chunks underneath my nails. I have read somewhere that type I DHT causes sebum secretion.

I have same exact problem I think its androgen related some people claim propecia helps. I might see a derm and try propecia for a month or so and see if it helps with the itch and if it doesnt just quit .

Yeah but unfortunately for us there is no cure for seborrhea either. Different places say different things about it

Is there a cure for seborrhea?
If you have seborrhea because of an underlying medical problem, the seborrhea may go away when the medical problem is treated. For most people, however, seborrhea is a lifetime problem that can be controlled with good hygiene and by using the right preparation.

Scalp seborrhea and dandruff do not cause permanent hair loss. Often, scalp seborrhea doesn't even itch significantly. Seborrhea can appear during infancy, starting shortly after birth and lasting several months. It may affect the scalp ("cradle cap") or produce scaly patches on the body. Adults of all ages may develop seborrhea, too, especially on the scalp and face.

After almost a decade of experimenting with different things, most of all nizoral and hydrocrotizone, which seem to work, yet it always comes back in waves, i have finally found a combination which works, and at this time my temples and crown have been totally void of any yellow flakes, itchyness etc, for the last 3 months. (longer than ever b4)

its selsun gold (which is selenium sulphide) and topical elocon (mometasone) which is stronger than hydrocortizone.

I urge u to try this combination, but elecon is by prescription, as i had the worst seborraic dermititis, and now i have none. no regrowth as of yet.

also get this, excessive hair growth '(hypertrichosis) is a side effect. not happening for me yet, but hopefully.

  • Skin irritation at site of application, such as burning, stinging, itching and redness.
  • Allergic inflammation of the skin (contact dermatitis).
  • Changes in skin pigmentation.
  • Pins and needles (paraesthesia).
  • Acne.
  • Excessive hair growth (hypertrichosis).
  • Inflammation of the hair follicles (folliculitis).
  • Stretch marks (striae).
  • Thinning of the skin.
  • Prolonged use of this medicine on extensive areas of skin, broken or raw skin, or underneath airtight dressings may on rare occasions result in enough corticosteroid being absorbed to have side effects on other parts of the body, for example a decrease in the production of natural hormones by the adrenal glands. See warning section above.

I have used propecia and it did reduce and almost stopped the seborrhea. However a few weeks in I started having scalp pain. It felt like my scalp was inflamed. My scalp felt tender and sore all the time so I quit the propecia. A few weeks later the sebum came back.

seborrhea doen't form a tipical male pattern baldness shape, so if you are losing hair also in the sides, than it could be seborrhea.

to my understanding, there is strong correlation between male pattern baldness and seborreha (a lot of guys have them both), but most of dermatologist say it is not the case of hairloss (in my personal experinece 3 out of 4 dermatologist said, that seborrhea does not cause hair loss)

i personally have tried to fix seborrhea first.. but unfortunatley didn't see it through. to my understanding, it is easier to "fix" seborrhea (max 3 month work, but it does come back)

but i am not a doctor and you shold see someone

I'm considering trying this regimen you recommend. have you notice increase shedding or further hair loss with elocon?
