Can Propecia mitigate Rogaine dependence?

Hi all,

I turn 22 this month and have finally taken the plunge and started treatment for my hair loss. Currently, my hair is has thinned significantly on the vertex, however the full extent is not evident unless my hair is wet. Dry, it looks like a normal 'bald spot.'

My doctor suggested using both Propecia and Rogaine, describing the Propecia as "a pill to stop you losing more hair" and suggested I start Rogaine immediately to attempt to re-grow what has been lost. Through my own research I realise that if I am fortunate, Propecia may help me re-grow lost hair as well (although over a longer time period).

Therefore, I am left with the following question:
I realise that once I end treatment, the newly gained hair will fall out. However, if I use Rogaine to stimulate new growth will my new hair be dependent on it, assuming I am taking Propecia at the same time? Is it possible that Rogaine could be used to stimulate the new growth, stopping treatment once satisfactory re-growth has been achieved, and relying on Propecia to maintain the re-growth?

It seems unwise to unnecessarily become dependent on two separate and expensive, products.

Thanks all,
I'd appreciate your council.

I think the hair grown from Rogaine is very specifically Rogaine-dependent. Propecia will allow you to retain the majority of your normal hair, but not Rogaine-dependent hair. Rogaine is a forever kind of drug, which is why i stopped using it, not because it doesn't work.
