My derm said thinnings on the side of the head can be a symptom of male pattern baldness as it's possible some male pattern baldness patients can lose it on the side of the head (which contradicts that horseshoe shape). Anyone heard of a such?

Depends on the person but I think even hairs in the back and sides are susceptible to male pattern baldness they are just more resistant maybe less receptors then hairs on the usual horseshoe part of the head. So its possible but lets be honest for every 100 questions about hair loss there are only a few good answers there is a lot we dont know.

Triangular Alopecia

At least Rassman considers it normal in male pattern baldness

My right temple is almost completely decimated while the left one is still fine. I've noticed that some guys with horse shoes never lose the temple points while others lose all hair in the sideburns range

I have this too. Has anyone ever lessened it with Propecia or minoxidil?

The sides of my head above the sideburns and around the ears have thinned quite a bit.
