Can I use generic Proscar (Finasteride) as a substitute to Finasteride Propecia?

If I cut it into 4 pieces and take one daily, am I going to be missing out by not taking the 1mg tablet instead or is it essentially the same thing?

I would think that most doctors prescribe proscar, at least mine did.
