im like an NW2 but i do have diffuse thinning too so i was wondering when my hair starts looking like **** again and its time to cut, can i just tell them to leave the top alone and trim the sides, so that way maybe if i grow the top of my hair long will it be able to cover more forehead and make my hairline look better until i regrow the hair?
can i just get the sides cut?

Try whatever makes it look better, I've found that sometimes shorter haircuts look better than longer hair on top. Whichever makes it least obvious your losing!

that's idealy what you need to go for on the sides once your hair in the temple, and point area are thinning
Get the sides sheared short to the point where its faded. Until the area around your ears, nape and temple points are semi shaved. keep the top layered, and semi-parted with a sweep to the stronger temple area
