can finasteride (proscar) be dissolved in glycerin?

It probably dissolves in glycerin, at least to some extent. But here is the really thorny issue: are you willing to TAKE A CHANCE on that, without knowing for certain-sure that it does?

Only a small chance. Finasteride is well-known to be soluble in ethanol. The one thing that does worry me a little bit about it is that most people will try to dissolve it in something that's considerably less than 100% pure alcohol. Wine, for example, is typically 12% alcohol, and a certain poster on alt.baldspot was famous for dissolving his Proscar in wine and drinking the proper metered amount every day to get 1 mg of the drug. But did the finasteride really actually fully DISSOLVE in what was very watered-down alcohol? I don't know the answer to that question. I recommend that if people are going to be doing that, they should dissolve it in as strong a booze as they can get, to maximize the probability of fully dissolving.

Glycerin appears to be of generally low oral toxicity in humans. FAO has placed glycerin in the category “Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI) not specified’ which means that the total daily intake does not, in the opinion of the committee, represent a hazard to health. But you have to be aware that in some toxicity studies doses above 700 mg/kg bw cause headache, nausea and diuresis. High concentrations have caused red blood cell and kidney damage after oral and intravenous administration. So you can use it but don't abuse it.
On the other hand can you tell for sure that glycerin wont react or bond with finasteride causing a decrease on the biologic activitie? :jackit:

Gotcha. I'm dissolving mine in Everclear (95% alcohol). Tastes awful (even tiny doses) though. I normally just crush it up as much as I can with whatever I have on hand, and then rake the dust into the alcohol. Hope that's effective.

Also, as the poster above me mentioned, there isn't a chance of the alcohol and the finasteride reacting in some weird way causing it to be ineffective, right?

I don't think so. After all, there's been a number of studies done with topical finasteride in which it was dissolved in ethanol and applied to both animals and humans. Regardless of the separate issue of whether or not finasteride actually WORKS when applied topically in alcohol, I don't think those very serious doctors and scientists would have tried it in the first place, if finasteride wasn't even stable in alcohol.
