can an agnostic get elected, if honest?

If I run as a democrat, and have to go through their primary possibly against an incumbant, do you think I could get much of the democrat vote? There is public funding equal to his campaign finance. Just a matter of who the voters trust more. You guys know my semi libertarian views a bit. Do you think if they know I'm agnostic and kinda fiscally conservative, could I win as a blu dog democratt in a very socially liberal district?

Re: might be running for office

And how many people will vote against me just because I'm agnostic? I do live in a liberal area.

I'd forget about the whole thing if I were you CCS, you're way too naive to ever make it in public office.
Besides, what about your trouble with the law?

I would have thought you were a dyed in the wool Republican going by your posts! I'd keep your views on gun control quiet rather than your agnosticism tbh. :)

Republican??? Don't they oppose gay marriage and abortion and pornography? You know I support all three. I just don't like Obama and his spendulus and government take over of corporations.

70% of people support gun rights, though maybe not in my liberal district. I'll have to find out. Just going by the 70% national district, and the fact that 75% of both houses of the legislature support gun rights, I suspect it might be a good issue to back. But research, research research.

Sorry I must have taken your comments out of context with your general stance. I know both Dems and Reps have come a lot towards the middle ground but from my view across the pond here I see gun rights and the notion of government keeping their hands off big business (and local government) as being stalwart Republican policies.

I dont know what state you are in, perhaps views on gun laws vary with Dems in different states..I certainly cant imagine most Dems in New England as having NRA car stickers.

You might be able to run for local or state office as an agnostic, especially if you ran in a relatively secular state such as CA or NY... but to run for federal office as an agnostic? Not a chance in hell. Too much religiosity in this country. There are broad swaths of the US that are governed by the Christian version of the Taliban.

Put it this way... there are several congressmen who support Israel's continued annexation of Palestine because they openly and vocally believe that this action will expedite the coming of the "end times".

I think I'll just carefully write up the changes I want, in polished laws, or explicitly which ones I want overturned, and then I'll contact my representatives and threaten: "sponsor this or I will run against you in 2010. Or tell me what you are up against and who I may lobby."

That would be cheaper than running for office. I'd hate to have to miss work to go do a filabuster. In my state, all the democrats can do is filabuster republican bills. They don't have the votes to propose anything.

The democrats want what I want on most issues. I'd rather work for one of them and help lobby a few bills through than actually run for office. I might run as an libertarian though just so I can get the tax payer money to then push my views. $12,000 and I can run some commercials and pay for flyers, selling many ideas even if I lose. I think I'll do that.

aren't there already 3 agnostics in the US house of reps? 2 Buddhists and some fella who belongs to some kind of left of centre unitarian church

granted they didn't 'run as' agnostics but I think they were questioned about their beliefs before the election

That's true, and actually now that I think about it, there's a Muslim congressman from Minnesota.

Since congress is elected locally, I suppose I have to somewhat retract my statement and say that it is possible for someone to get elected to congress if they are an agnostic. But, to run for a nationwide plebiscite, like the Presidency?... no way.

Minnesota is a reasonably socially liberal state, and even there the congressman took all kinds of slanderous and insidious heat for being a muslim.

i don't see why someone wouldn't vote for someone because of their religious views. IMHO it's always a sign of a bad candidate if they start using their religion to steer their political views i mean i can guarantee it's was religious views that won bush so many votes
in the uk we tend to keep politics and religion separate in that in that only ann widdecombe would ever bring up religion in a political context (and gets ridiculed for it)

i find it shocking when i saw on the news that America was going to have an NHS like free health system and EVERYONE was opposing, now i would say fair enough if the arguments had any intelligence to them but they were complete crap, i mean the NHS is not perfect but i can assure you that it's much better than having to pay alot of money for breaking your leg and i do have to say the quality of healthcare is good and miles better than "free clincs"

I don't think an agnostic or atheist can ever become President of the U$ of A.

Maybe in weird Europe, where communists eat babies...

Anyway I would like to see Mary Carey as a President of the U$ of A
