Hey Temples.....how are you?

A while back, you typed this on a thread about head &shoulders:

It contains selenium sulfide as opposed to pyrithione zinc. There was one study conducted by Johnson & Johnson that showed more hairs in anagen with selenium sulfide poos as well as pyrithione zinc.

Either are good to rotate with nizoral.

My question is where could I find this study by Johnson & Johnson? I did a search on google and couldn't find it. Anyone else wanna help? :?

Here is a relavent study... (googled pyrithione zinc hair study and it was the first result : ) Showing Nizoral is better than Pyrithione Zinc containing shampoos.

Excerpt.... "It has long been known that 2% prescription Nizoral has beneficial effects on Androgenic Alopecia (male pattern baldness). It however has been unclear whether the same benefits can be obtained by using the non-prescription 1% version.

In the study presented (see below), one hundred male volunteers with mild to moderate dandruff and somewhat oily scalp, were using, in a double-blind fashion, either a 1% Nizoral shampoo or a 1% zinc pyrithione shampoo, 2-3 times a week for 6 months.

Analysis of the different parameters set up in the study shows that the hair diameter gradually increased with Nizoral use (+8.46%) over a 6 month period, whereas the diameter showed a trend to decrease with zinc pyrithione use over the same period (-2.28%).

The sebum excretion rate was reduced with Nizoral (-6.54%) while it increased with zinc pyrithione (+8.2%) over the same period of time. The number of hair shed over a 24-hour period was reduced by 16.46% with Nizoral and 6.02% with zinc pyrithione after 6 months.

Finally, the percentage hairs in anagen phase increased by 6.4% and 8.4% respectively during the study time. The results are similar to a previous study done on 2% prescription strength Nizoral where it was shown that use of 2% Nizoral yielded a 7% average increase in hair shaft diameter similar to what was achieved by the control group using 2% Minoxidil and a non-medicated shampoo.

So for any hair loss sufferer, this research clearly indicates that using 1% or 2% Nizoral 2-3 times per week, will have positive effects on hair growth as well as controlling dandruff.

It is still unclear at this time whether it's the anti-fungal properties or the anti-androgenic properties of Ketokonazole (active ingredient in Nizoral) thats responsible for the hair thickening effects, however because of the decrease in sebum rates as well, it is the authors opinion that the results are due to the anti-androgenic properties of Ketokonazole. Well sh*t.......I thought pyrithione zinc was supposed to be beneficial to male pattern baldness. It said that it actually decreased the diameter of the hair. Or maybe, it was the male pattern baldness that actually was allowed to thin the hair, while treating it with pyrithione zinc, ................maybe the zinc just slows it down, while nizoral helps to stop it. Gotta remember that this study compared the two. Zinc may work.........just not as good as the nizoral. Still makes ya wonder what the selenium sulfide would do, since it was not used in this study. :?

I have heard selenium was "good for hair" but can't find a study showing that a selenium sulfide containing shampoo helps hair....

Here is a study I found:
http://www.hairloss-research.org/HeadandShoulders.html

Head and Shoulders for Hair loss?

The following study indicates that Zinc Pyrithione shampoo (Head and Shoulders) may actually somewhat help with pattern hair loss. I use the Wal-Mart “Equateâ€￾ brand for about $1.50 and alternate it with 2% Nizoral and Dr. Proctor’s Hair Regrowth Shampoo (available at male pattern baldness Research Buyer’s Club).

1: Br J Dermatol. 2003 Aug;149(2):354-62.
The effects of minoxidil, 1% pyrithione zinc and a combination of both on hair density: a randomized controlled trial.
Berger RS, Fu JL, Smiles KA, Turner CB, Schnell BM, Werchowski KM, Lammers KM.
Hill Top Research, Inc., East Brunswick, NJ, USA.
BACKGROUND: Recent studies of antidandruff shampoos or tonics containing antifungal or antibacterial agents produced effects suggestive of a potential hair growth benefit. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this 6-month, 200-patient, randomized, investigator-blinded, parallel-group clinical study was to assess the hair growth benefits of a 1% pyrithione zinc shampoo. The efficacy of a 1% pyrithione zinc shampoo (used daily), was compared with that of a 5% minoxidil topical solution (applied twice daily), a placebo shampoo and a combination of the 1% pyrithione zinc shampoo and the 5% minoxidil topical solution. METHODS: Two hundred healthy men between the ages of 18 and 49 years (inclusive) exhibiting Hamilton-Norwood type III vertex or type IV baldness were enrolled. Total hair counts, the primary efficacy measure, were obtained using fibre-optic microscopy and a computer-assisted, manual hair count method. Secondary measures of efficacy included assessments of hair diameter, as well as patient and investigator global assessments of improvement in hair growth. These were based on photographs of the scalp using both midline and vertex views. RESULTS: Hair count results showed a significant (P < 0.05) net increase in total visible hair counts for the 1% pyrithione zinc shampoo, the 5% minoxidil topical solution, and the combination treatment groups relative to the placebo shampoo after 9 weeks of treatment. The relative increase in hair count for the 1% pyrithione zinc shampoo was slightly less than half that for the minoxidil topical solution and was essentially maintained throughout the 26-week treatment period. No advantage was seen in using both the 5% minoxidil topical solution and the 1% pyrithione zinc shampoo. A small increase in hair diameter was observed for the minoxidil-containing treatment groups at week 17. Assessments of global improvements by the patients and investigator generally showed the benefit of 5% minoxidil. The benefit of the 1% pyrithione zinc shampoo used alone tended (P < 0.1) to be apparent only to the investigator. CONCLUSIONS: Hair count results show a modest and sustained improvement in hair growth with daily use of a 1% pyrithione zinc shampoo over a 26-week treatment period.

Here is a study done on nizoral 1% and it says that in comparison to pyrithione zinc, nizoral increased diameter of hair, decreased sebum emission, while pyrithione zinc didn't do the above, but it did increase the number of anagen hairs like nizoral does.

Heres the link:
http://www.hairloss-research.org/nizoral.html

NIZORAL 1% STUDY SHOWS BENEFITS FOR PATTERN BALDING
In a study presented to the Am Academy of Dermatology, the researchers associated with McNeil, makers of the 1% OTC version of Nizoral Shampoo found that it had, as it has been shown for the 2% precription version, beneficial effects on Androgenetic Alopecia (male pattern baldness).

In short they found that 1% Nizoral Shampoo reduced sebum emission, and increased hair shaft diameter (which decreases in male pattern baldness) after being used 2-3 times a week for a period of 6 months. They also found a percentage increase in the overall number of anagen hairs, which typically decreased overtime in male pattern baldness. By comparison they found Zinc Pyrithione Shampoo (Head and Shoulders) did not decrease sebum emission or increase hair shaft diameter, but did increase the overall number of anagen hairs as well.

The decrease in sebum emission caused by 1% Nizoral Shampoo, seems to confirm its antiandrogenic action, which is though by most to be only one of the reasons it helps hair loss.
