Ok guys I need your advice. I currently just turned 19. I've always had a long haircut until a few months ago. I tried a buzzcut recently and now I noticed that I have receded temples. It's probably just a little under an nw2 hairline. My mom says it's always been like that, but I'm not sure about that. Anyway it seems my cousins in the family that are older than me seems to be losing hair too, like nw2 or approaching nw3 (don't know if they take finasteride). Uncles are nw3 or nw4, grandpa's are bald. Yeah so I don't have good hair genes haha. But anyway, I am considering finasteride, because my friends said out of nowhere that think think I might be going bald, idk if it's just because they've never seen my hairline before or what. I won't live in denial, just wanna know what to do. I don't buy into the fear mongering about finasteride, I'll take the very minimal risk, I'll at least try it. I've looked at huge unbiased studied and am convinced in the vast majority of cases it is completely safe. Here's my question though: If I am not losing hair, then would getting on finasteride increase my follicle sensitivity to DHT overtime? Like let's say I will not actually start losing hair until 25 and then get on finasteride and keep it until 35. Will I be able to get on finasteride now and keep it until I'm 35 as well, or would finasteride lose effect or do something to my hair to where I'll only be able to keep it until I'm 30. Just trying to figure out the best plan of action I should do to keep my hair the longest. This just sucks, because I don't know if I'm losing my hair or not, since I am not sure if my temoles have been slightly recessed my whole life... my mom has always cut my hair and said it's always been like that, but it could have just been a slow change over time. Sorry for rambling guys, anyone with a similar experience or any helpful knowledge/advice would be appreciated. Wait? Get on finasteride ASAP? See a derm and have him check it out, and listen to him? Thanks in advance!

Okay listen up buddy...
1. Don't look at your family, it's a weak indication. If someone related to you has lost just a tiny bit of hair, you know male pattern baldness runs in your family and that is all you need to know.
2. Screw your freinds and family's advice. If you see a change, it's probably because you're losing it
3. Go see a Doctor and as to get on finasteride.
4. Upregulation of AR receptors is a not an established theory.
5. Get on finasteride
6. Get on finasteride

I started on finasteride when I was your age.

Thanks man. I was leaning towards doing that. If I may ask, how old are you? How long has finasteride worked for you? And should I take anything while taking finasteride? I've heard zinc supplements are good while taking it because it suppresses estrogen levels or something idk... But yeah I think I'll go to a derm and get on finasteride, there's just that uncertainty if my hairline has always been like this, but it probably hasn't, so I think I'll just get on finasteride.

Everyone here will tell you get on finasteride as soon as you notice something is going on, and you should. Don't think about these crazy side effects people talk about, just take the little pill every morning and go about your life. Applying 1 ML of minoxidil once (or twice) a day works in unison with finasteride. Honestly, it all depends on how much this means to you, but without a doubt you NEED to be on an anti androgen (finasteride).

I'm 21 now. My hair loss has kept progressing... sadly. So I am now taking Dutasteride.

F*ck supplements, that's money out the window.

Get on finasteride and stay safe :) - you can always add topicals later if finasteride fails to work/meet your expectations.

Ok cool thanks. I've always been skeptical about supplements and such... never really thought muktivitamons or anything actually did anything... just gotta eat good I guess. Quick question... I don't think my hairloss is that agressive, so would you recommend taking like 0.5 mg per day so I would be able to bump it up to 0.75 mg years later, and then 1 mg even later. Idk it just seems smart to start at a low dose of it's still effective. I plan on get proscar and just cutting up the pill since it'll be a lot cheaper.

Just take the normal dose, 1mg / 1.25mg a day. If you start balding at 19 you most likely have very aggressive hair loss.

I'm going to cut proscar up with a 4 split cutter. But I don't want to take 1.25, so it'd be alright to cut the 1.25 in half to 0.75 right? Since 0.75 is pretty much just as effective?

From a study http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/10495374

[h=4]RESULTS:[/h]Scalp skin DHT levels declined significantly by 13.0% with placebo and by 14.9%, 61.6%, 56. 5%, 64.1%, and 69.4% with 0.01, 0.05, 0.2, 1, and 5 mg doses of finasteride, respectively. Serum DHT levels declined significantly (P <.001) by 49.5%, 68.6%, 71.4%, and 72.2% in the 0.05, 0.2, 1, and 5 mg finasteride treatment groups, respectively.
[h=4]CONCLUSION:[/h]In this study, doses of finasteride as low as 0.2 mg per day maximally decreased both scalp skin and serum DHT levels. These data support the rationale used to conduct clinical trials in men with male pattern hair loss at doses of finasteride between 0.2 and 5 mg.

Even if you get side effects, microdosing with finasteride will be better for you in the long run if you can't handle the 1mg/daily. Keep at it.
