Bodyfat% and male pattern baldness

Do you guys know if there is any correlation between the percentage bodyfat you carry and male pattern baldness.

I ask this because I read that guys putting testosterone gel on their belly have significantly more hairloss than guys putting it on their biceps or chest. Could it be that fat cells convert testosterone quickly and efficiently to DHT?

No correlation. In females, peripheral fat cells convert Androstenedione to estrogen (via aromatase). In males, no such conversion of T -> DHT occurs in peripheral fat cells

Male pattern baldness is more complicated than just DHT. Fat is not just a sack of mass that does nothing, it's considered a major organ that secretes hormones.

It makes sense that body fat could affect how testosterone turns into DHT, which can impact male pattern baldness. The part about putting gel on your belly vs chest/biceps kind of fits with that idea since more fat might mean more conversion locally.

i've stopped trying to be really skinny because my hair suffers. despite my strong regimen, i still need to eat adequate protein every day or else i notice my diffuse thinning picking up. having a little body fat is better for you overall i think

Well recently some scientists found that irritation/damage affects hair stem cells in mice and that it affects human cells the same way (in lab tests anyway). The effect is caused by white blood cells I think making the dermal fat release monounsaturated fatty acids which signal the hair stem cells to get active. They also found in mice anyway so far that just applying those same acids topically with a carrier (and no injury) will activate follicles to grow that arent in an anagen state even if they are in a diminished state. I wonder if this could be related to why some people are big responders to dermarolling and others arent. Maybe the big responders have much better fat levels around the dermis releasing more of those acids than someone whose skin has thinned a lot up there.
