Body Dysmorphia

Not trying to be a jerk, but there are quite a few people on the forums that don't suffer any hair-loss at all, but seem to suffer instead from body dysmorphia and would likely benefit from psychotherapy.

I would suggest that these people be recommended to look into this instead of having snarky comments made to them. But snarky comments are made only out of frustration and despair, whether it's right or not.

I knew a person with perfect, Brad Pit-like hair. He berated himself in front of me constantly saying how bald he was while I'm standing there realistically balding. I never knew if he was making fun of me or if he was being genuine. :badmood:

Mate, everyone who is on here has the right to be here and we are all dealing with our own problems (however small they may be).

I don't really see how you are in the position to be diagnosing members and recommending psychotherapy to people.

Sounds to me like you are just bitter about not catching your hairloss early enough. I say full power to the guys that get on here at the first signs of hairloss and start trying to combat it, the majority of people on here wish they had done the same so how can we criticise them? I'm sure these guys aren't doing this is spite of others who have hairloss, they simply want to stop it before it gets to the stage where it is unsalvagable (and with the advancements in treatments these days, who can blame them?)

This website doesn't have a prerequisite of 'x amount of hairloss' before you can become a member.

You say you're not trying to be a jerk, but then you clearly contradict this only a few words later by stating you think this is simply some peoples imagination and that they instead suffer from a mental disorder... I just wouldn't be so quick to judge, yeah some blokes on here post pics that others would kill to have, but it doesn't make their case any less important in my opinion.

No Anarch is right.
If someone with a NW2 comes on here and states that they think they're starting to lose hair and want some help with treatments thats fine, and I have no problem at all with it.
BUT,
If someone with a NW2 (or less) comes on here claiming to be bald and saying that they can no longer face the outside world, get a girlfreind ect ect. Then racks up 100's of posts, then that person has obviously got a deluded view of their situation.

I agree with s.a.f. I think some low Norwood levels on here seem to exaggerate their situation. I think their "fear" of becoming higher on the Norwood level is really what causes them to post threads how "its the end of the world" for them. I think they jump the gun too quickly. Some fear they will go from a NW2 to a NW4 in a matter of months even with using treatments. Also some people who are not responding get frustrated and feel they will end up bald. Its amazing how ALL of have placed a large focus on hair. Most of the ones with BDD, like myself, are going to view it as a real negative hinderance but once I come to my senses I realize how ridiculous my perception of my hair becomes. We live in a "superficial world" now and any little flaws on some are going to be perceived as a hinderance in attracting women. Its funny how much a single guy dwells on "the game" of how to attract the hottest girls. Yet it only takes some confidence, high self esteem and a sense of humor to attract most of them. However, no one seems to believe that could be possible other than those who are smart enough to prove it is true. Some people like CCS are going to spend their whole life experimenting on finding the perfect solution on how to attract a perfect ten. Dudley Moore in the movie "10" proved you can get one even if your a short dude with average looks.

F*ck sake , just because ou can't see their hair loss doesn't mean it ain't happening. I was shedding craz at the start and still had perfect hair. IT was slowly declining though. Catch it as earl as you can.

Body dsymorphic is just a bullshit term.

Yea, honestly if you guys can't take the fact that we caught our balding early then i think this forum should be separated by Norwoods...since all the 'really bald' people on this forum come here to complain and rant anyways with no actual contribution towards getting hair back

I'm not saying there should be a Norwood witch-hunt. I'm just saying that we need to recommend psychotherapy for people that may have body dysmorphia. It is a real mental disease like bulimia.

In no way do I discourage people from posting on the forums. I think the response should be a positive one such as cognitive counseling.

There you go again twisting the situation, did you even read my post above?

The reason I come on here is to help people who are losing hair. When you attack balder guys you are failing to realise that they know what they're talking about because they HAVE ALREADY BEEN THROUGH IT.
And therefore we know from the benefit of hindsight what you guys with minimal loss are taking for granted.
There is no sour grapes here just trying to get you to realise the reality of the situation. If its so bad at NW2 WTF are you going to do if you ever actually go slick bald?

You dont believe theres any BDD on here? I think there's a bit of it in every one of us. But some more than others

I read a lot about this condition - obviously an extreme example would be michael jordan - and i think it is related to how it is very hard to "know" what we look like. For instance, I am generally considered ugly and feel self concious getting my picture taken, or when talking to hot girls. But when i look in the mirror i feel generally content with my appearance - my bathroom has very nice lights i thinks. Anyways, the reality is, that my brain, and i think everyones to some extent, has certain defence mechanisms to hide harsh truths from us we are not able to accept. People with Body Dysmorphia, i believe, have this mechanism flipped around, which can be very damaing.

Might be paranoid, but I'm starting to think some posters are trolling. :dunno:

Freedom Coder, I think you meant Michael Jackson not Michael Jordan.
