BLACK MAN NEEDS ADVICE

I am 27 years old and just recently cut my hair pretty low after my barber pushed my shape up back. I just decided to cut it very low and let it all grow back. Anyway, when I did this I noticed thinning in the corners up front. I had seen these thin spots in the corners years ago but they were nowhere near noticable to anyone else (I could barely notice them) and my barber told me that my hair has always grown a little thin in these areas. So I never thought about it again until last week when I cut my hair very low (not too far from bald). Now, After seeing this thinning I now know that I can't just chalk it up to always being thin there anymore because I have had my hair this low before and I never noticed it. Now, it's not bad. I've shown it to a few people and they can't see what I'm talking about and the more my hair growns the more unnoticable it is to me. But the point is I know that my hair is thinning now and I want to jump right on top of it before it gets worse. Are there any brothers out there who could recommend any particular type of treatment for me. I read through some of the threads and figured that since I am a Black man and we have a different texture of hair that some of the advice given here would not apply to me. I see a lot of people mentioning shedding as a side affect in many of the treatments. Does this apply to Black men also because if it does those treatments may not be for me. I keep my hair relatively low and I believe shedding would be very noticable. I just basically want to get some feedback/advice from other Black men about my situation. Thanks a lot. Peace.

It's doubtful that you're going to find any black dudes here giving advice.

The treatments should work for you. You'll never know unless you try them.

I'm pretty sure the standard treatments work just as effectively for non-caucasians as they do for us. I noticed Rogaine.com even has a picture of a black guy and an asian on their site. Guess that's their way of saying it can work for everyone.

IMO, the best thing to start with is minoxidil (rogaine or generic), it's the most highly recommended by dermatologists as well. The best place to get it is from one of the sellers on ebay. 4 month supply for under $35 w/ship.

It says in the instructions that if your loss isn't on the vertex (top of the head) it may not work for you. This is because that's the only place they tested when going thru FDA trials. I, and many others can say from experience that it can definitely work in front!

Some people have a problem with flaking or itch when starting on minoxidil, so it might be best to start using just once per day 'til you know if that'll be a prob for you. Heck, since your loss is just minor, you may see satisfactory results staying at 1 x daily application.

Minoxidil takes the least commitment of time and money compared to other treatments, another reason it's the best thing to start with. You could see results in 2-4 months. If in 6 months you've not had desired results, then I'd maybe consider propecia (assuming the shaved look ain't for you).

My best regrowth/thickening has been from minoxidil, and it's nice to not take a hormone altering pill (propecia/proscar) if you don't have to.

Good luck, and Happy holidays!

Didnt you guys ever see Karl Malone in that Rogaine commercial back in the day. The treatments should work for whites and blacks alike.

"Blacks have curly coarse hair which is advantageous to hair transplantation, they also have darker skin so the transplanted hairs are not contrasted against much lighter skin so the appearance is much better. On the negative side blacks tend to have keloid scarring so they have a greater chance of having more noticeable donor scars"

Holy crap. It may just be the fact that I've been drinking wine all night, and then took a hit of reefer... but seeing the above statement next to that pic of Ned Flanders has me laughing me ace-off. Read the words and look at his face, it's like Ned's saying it to you, personally!
