hey guys,

So ive been using minoxidil 5% on my hairline for almost 6 months now and added propecia 1mg/day and nizoral 1% EOD about a month ago. i was wondering if anyone has had any success on the hairline while on the big 3 and if so, to what extent. im not holding my breath but im only 23 and am quite concerned (as we all are) so any advice, experiences or comments would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers.

I'm 25 and I saw new hairs on my hairline within 6 weeks of adding minoxidil (previously just on a month of finasteride). I'm totally buzz-cut to like a 0.5 though so its easy for me to spot new growth. The new hairs were noticeably far from the rest of my hairline.

The first signs of something working were the vellus (tiny blonde) hairs all over my temples, I would say within 4-5 weeks of adding minoxidil.

I actually have this one terminal hair that's effing miles away from my hairline, right in the middle of my temple. (I rub the liquid all over my temples). That hair really gives me hope heh (even though I have to shave it off because it looks stupid!).

My hairline's evened out on one side and its getting there on the other, that side is patchy as hell. (I'm a diffuse thinner and my hairline was all over the place). It can definitely do stuff on the hairline but it seems like slow progress.

I'd say if you're spotting any hairs, even just vellus growth then be patient to at least the year mark. It could take a while for the finasteride to start giving your scalp the protection it needs for the minoxidil to be effective. (That's probably total bull but that's how I feel like it works, finasteride protects, minoxidil grows).

There are also several stories in the success stories forum regarding hairline growth.

Have been on the big 3 for 3 years almost.... sadly vellus hairs is all I have ever had at my hair line/temples.

So I dont know how the word be patient would apply its maintained I guess what ive had but I did have slightly better hair 3 years back...

Perhaps its time to try something different im not sure at this point :innocent:

"finasteride protects, minoxidil grows" :woot: Got it in a nutshell right there!

Additionally you can expect to see a small amount of growth from finasteride, but over a long period of time.

As for effectiveness of the Big 3 on the hairline, I've been using just minoxidil, nizoral and laterly Tricomin for over 3 months now and have already seen some impressive regrowth. I'm sure my regrowth would be even better with finasteride, but my system won't tolerate it.

I was a NW3 when I began in July and this minoxidil/nizoral/Tricomin combo is edging me back into NW2 territory. The vellus hairs have now gone terminal and my temples are really starting to thicken up. :hump:

Some people respond better than others though, so be patient and depending on your stage, if you're a NW1-3 then maintainance isn't such a bad thing. Ultimately however, the scientific stats for all 3 meds are stacked heavily in your favour.

Thanks for the response guys, i now have some hope again. Ive had a significant amount of vellus hair growth from the minoxidil but it seems it stoped growing at around the 2.5 - 3 cm point so im really hoping that the finasteride can eventually allow the minoxidil to lengthen and maybe even darken the existing vellus hairs. im planning on giving it at least a year. only time will tell i spose.

It may be worth trying Tom Hagerty's scalp exercise, it creates a better environment for hair growth so you may benefit with it plus your current regime. Anyone can learn how to do the exercise, it just takes time.. like anything else

Yeah sorry.. Tom Hagerty's website is http://www.hairloss-reversibl.com

The information is free but he sells a video CD and booklet that demonstrates everything. I have the CD and can probably upload it if absolutely necessary.

I know its been discussed on this forum a lot.. but its pretty much a back and forth contraction of the frontalis and occupitalis muscles in the scalp. For example, raise your eyebrows.. that action is pretty easy. Now the one that works out the scalp is contracting the muscles just behind the ears (occupitalis), while releasing the frontalis muscles. If done right the whole scalp should move back and forth. Luckily i've always been able to do this, but the occupitalis muscles takes some practice for most people. When successful though, it provides great benefit to the scalp and underlying hair follicles.
