its obvious that the earlier you start propecia the better, but for those of us that cant take propecia is it always better to start a topical regimen early? or wait until more dire circumstances?

If you are receeding, but don't want to use Finasteride then definitely start topicals i.e. Minoxidil early because it will grow back some of your hair and make your existing hair thicker and healthier looking.

Also most importantly it will save you a lot of stress looking at your worsening hairline everyday in the mirror.

I really wish I started a few years earlier I'm 24 but I've been slowly receeding since 17.

Yes minoxidil loses effectiveness after an average 5years, but that's not to say it stop's working completely..

Your male pattern baldness will continue after say 5 years on minoxidil, but it will still be at a much slower rate than if you were on no treatments at all.

In my opinion maintenance of existing hair for a minimum 5years is definitely something worth investing in.

you've been saying this 5 years thing in a couple of the forums, and ive seen the studies, but i dont hear very many people on here actually getting and keeping results for that long... also if it seems like you're not responding that well at 2 years or so its gonna be a lot more difficult to have the motivation to keep up a serious regimen if you're still losing hair.
why arent you using spironolactone btw

There is not many people using a hairloss forum over 2 - 5 years+, so there is none to report and post pictures over that timeline. It dont mean that it wont happend. Think i seen 1 guy here being above basline after 17 years on finasteride and min, and 2 guys above baseline 10 years on finasteride. The rest with success forgets the forums or cba posting.

Or just gets bored of applying the minoxidil for that long...

You guys talk about applying minoxidil like it's the most time consuming thing in the world, it takes less than a minute!

Do you ever lose the motivation to shower in the morning? Or get bored of brushing your teeth? It's just one of those things you simply have to do to maintain your appearance.

I've been on minoxidil for 6months now and it had very good results,NW3 to almost a NW2, I will be posting photos as soon as a I get a decent f*cking camera!

Most people on this forum freak out after one shed and stop using minoxidil or else they forget how sh*t their hair looked when they began minoxidil and convince themselves that the hair now looks worse after using for so many months or years...

The fact is all the studies back it up, you've got an average 5yrs maintenance with minoxidil, some people maintain longer.

I'm not using spironolactone because of sides unfortunately, but spironolactone alone would not be as effective against male pattern baldness as minoxidil, it is a mediocre anti-androgen.

Using minoxidil, Tricomin and nizoral I think I can hope to maintain until I am at least 30, which would be fine by me...

I didn't get in this game to find the ultimate cure/panacea for baldness.... (not even finasteride will save your hair in the long term) I just wanted my hair to look normal for my age and have my confidence back again... this is definitely being achieved on my current regimen!

Yes that appears to be the consensus that the topical or any hairloss treatments respond best to those in the very earliest of phases, the sooner the better. Thats why I got on a regimen as soon as I noticed any thinning. Yes ppl on these forums often tell me that I should drop the minoxidil because Im not bad yet and also because the application process gets sickening. Anyway I put the Rogaine foam in along and crown
