Hi, i am 21
My temples have been receding since i was 19 or 18. Right now i think i am a nw2
My whole paternal family is bald, even the women

Right now i think my temples have stopped receding because i am now longer shedding like crazy.
I went to the derm and got a prescription for propecia, but he didnt actually say i was going bald even tho i asked me. He says that i do have low density, and that its normal to have receded temples at 21, but if i want i can take propecia.

Should i take propecia now? or should i wait till i see some thinning on the crown.

this is my logic:
i have read that propecia's effects last for about 8 years. So i start now i will have all my hair till i am 29 and then i will start to go bald.

but if i wait till i see some more thinning, might be when i am 26, i could restore what i lost and keep my new hair for some time, so i could have hair till iam 34.

The other option i was thinking was taking the pill 3 days a week. and when it stops working, taking 7 pills a week

what do you guys thinks?

here is a link to a post with my pictures

Good news: if you are a good responder finasteride will even work after those 8 years
bad news: your male pattern baldness will still continue whatever you do.

In your first year your hair might get a little thicker and maybe a few hairs of regrowth. After the first let's say 5 years your hair will slowely start losing ground again but way slower than it would do if you wouldn't go on finasteride. After those 8 years (as an exmaple) you hair status will be the same as it was when you started taking finasteride. After those 8 years finasteride will still keep working because your hairloss will get much slower :)

If I can give you just one tip: if you are 100% sure you are balding or will go bald start as early as possible because it is much easier for finasteride to maintain hair than to regrow it.

:)

what if i am not 100% i am going bald, are there any downsides of taking finasteride?

also,
imagine that a genie tells me that i will start to bald at 34 years old.
should i take propecia now, or when i am 34?

Aks how old your family meber were when they started balding. That will be a pretty good indication for yourself.
