Beginning Dutasteride

The first time I noticed that my temples were thinner than the rest of my hair was when I shaved my head between 21-22 years old. I'm now 23.

I started saw palmetto 320 mg/day as a male pattern baldness preventative when I was about 20. I can't say how effective it was, but I needed something stronger. It may have had a minimal benefit. I became familiarized with the research on saw palmetto (and how it isn't potent) when I started it, but I took it anyway as it never hurt me in any fashion. My hairline hasn't receded back much at all but the hair is finer at the temples, so I started on Dutas .05 mg/day, and rogaine foam in the morning; extra strength liquid at night. It's been about 20 days on dutas, and I haven't had any side effects. If I were to get side effects, when would they appear?

Also, I've never experienced any shedding, and never have woken up with hair on my pillow. Should I be anticipating a shed, now that I've started Dutasteride?

By the way, I think i'm seeing improvement after about 3 or 4 months using rogaine.

i can only speak from my own experience but i got sides pretty much straightaway - a week maybe. it does build up in your system though so theres still time but most people dont get them anyway.

shedding again varies but its a good sign. ive never shed and ive never had results. just something you have to suffer.

You would have had sides by now after 20 days so you should be o.k. Would have started on Propecia first though and gone to dutasteride later if Propecia was not working.

I moved from Propecia to dutasteride after 7 months as I got bad sides on Propecia and it wasn't working for hair.

3 months in on dutasteride and hair is much thinner all over and no sign of any re-growth, I don't get any sides on dutasteride. Will know in next few months if re-growth will happen..not that optomistic but this is the last resort..if it doesn't work then there is only HM left when it comes out.

You are young so think you will get good results from meds. Best of luck and keep faith and don't give up even if you do get shed.

Thanks for all the replies. I decided to go on dutasteride because of the higher level of DHT inhibition (of both 5AR enzymes) at a lower dose, compared to finasteride. I suppose I'll try finasteride if dutasteride doesn't work. I'm scrupulously watching my hairline for changes, improvement, and/or shedding. I'll keep posting as I am hopeful to make good progress.

Re: Beginning Dutas

Days 22-23 Update: I notice hair falling out in the sink when I rub my hands through my hair; more than usual. Currently at 24 days. No sides.

I'm almost at the one month mark. Last night was the first night I didn't take dutasteride, because my libido has been decreasing -- and an orgasm doesn't nearly feel as good as it used to; erections are softer. I'm thinking maybe going on dutasteride before trying finasteride was a big mistake. I'm worried to continue taking this, because the effects may not subside.

At first I thought maybe it was psychosomatic -- and maybe it is -- but the longer I take this, the more unlikely I think the aforementioned would be the case.

Should I switch to finasteride? Please advise.

Thanks.

You could reduce to EOD which is what I have done. I did not get sides at all but shedding is pretty bad even though now at 3 months so thought reducing a bit for now may help slow shedding, for you may reduce sides. Shedding is very likely so be prepared and try to stick with it.

I'm struggling myself as I only see increased loss but if you take hair cycles into account really improvements often are at well beyond 3 months.

I'm going to make an effort to stay out of the side effects forum for a while. I think my mind was playing tricks on me, and my libido is fine.

that is actually a pretty common side effect. I also experienced this. But it went away. If you want to help it supplement it. There are numerous libido booster pills that help.

This is what i take to help it along ... the main ingredient is the yohimbe which is pretty much the same crap in all those "as seen on TV" natural penis pills. All the rest of the stuff is energy/stamina herbs. But i'm not payin $30+ for it lol.

Yohimbe does have some warnings with it but if y our the average healthy young male you should be fine.

I notice that when I stop dutasteride for a few days, my sex drive starts coming back. I've done this multiple times to see if it's the drug, and I'm positive at this point that I can attribute the lack of libido (and sexual interest) to dutasteride.

Should I cut back to a few times a week, or just get off it completely and try Finasteride?

Kinda hard to explain, given dutasteride's very long half-life, isn't it?

It is hard to explain. How much of a reduction in serum concentration occurs at the 3 day mark? Is it possible to notice differences in libido within days of changing my dosage; i.e., daily to EOD, to three days off?

I know, it sounds ridiculous... because the half life of dutasteride is so long, that after being on it fairly consistently for a month, a three day break isn't going to eradicate the drug out of my system very quickly.

You've got to give it more time for your system to stabilise..takes 2-3 months.

Still would have started in finasteride rather than dutasteride but now you're on it stick with it.

EOD is still a good dose due to its half life so you could go with that
