Balding from the sides?

I have a weird kind of balding. I'm close to NW3. I believe I have some diffuse thinning but my hair has begun looking really odd. My hairline is receding so I grew out my hair more to do a comb over to help hide it. I looked at myself in the mirror today and I noticed that you can see the skin visibly from the sides of my head.

Is anyone thinning from the sides? I thought that the sides were the LAST part of the head to start showing hair loss.

there is no way the sides could be affected my diffuse alopecia or androgenic alopecia.

I mean , even the baldest man in the world would have his sides intact.
and that's how the combover is possible
just look at the norwood scale

I have hair there but you can clearly see the skin. I don't know what to make of it.

It is a form of hair loss when your hair around your ears, your nape and I think it is called edges are thinning but will never go completely bald.

I'm also experiencing increased thinning on the sides (particularly in the areas above my side burns) and above and around my "ear line". I noticed signs of general thinning there as far back as 4 years or so ago, and it's definitely gotten worse. The hair around the nape of my neck has remained intact for now. I do not think this is text book M.P.B. and I suppose it's conceivable to conclude that some of us are predisposed to more than one form of hair loss. All I can say for me and my issues that the option of wearing a hair system is out.

Wow...losing my hair, I wasn't given any chance at all then. F%$* my life.

This would explain a lot. My hair looks weird. It doesn't look healthy and clean. It's for this reason that I never wanted to try finasteride.
