I have read very often in hair loss forums that people with negative experiences are more likely to post than people with positive ones, resulting in an overall negative impression.
My story with Finasteride -generic propecia- is a positive one. At 28, I started noticing thinning in the front and a slight receding in my hair line. My hairloss was very mild, and I never heard any comments from my friends or co-workers (my hair stylist did notice, though). The thing with mild hair loss is that is difficult to establish. Memory is a tricky thing, and when you get paranoid or obsessive your perception is very unreliable. But after looking pictures of myself a few year back, I confirmed that I was indeed loosing hair.
At the time I was lonely, recently divorced, and very concerned with getting some female attention.
I started taking 1mg daily of generic propecia from aclepsa.com. Side effect were mild: a slight soreness in the nipples (which, based on what I've read so far, seems to be the most common side effect) that dissapeared in 2-3 weeks. No decrease in the libido. If anything (and this has been reported by other people as well) I experienced an actual increase in sexual desire. Erectile performance remained the same, but I noticed that my sperm was a bit more fluid or "watery", which didn't really bother me.
After 3 months I noticed improvements and less shedding. After six months I had a noticeable thicker front area. After one year, I stopped worrying about my hair. Thinning was completely gone. At that time I stopped taking Finasteride. I was a bit tired of taking the medicine. Also, I finally found mysef in a fulfilling relationship and I decided that my hair was not that important after all (of course, that is easy to say when your hair looks great!)
Exactly one year later, my thinning reverted to the original situation (as represented by the drug manufacturers). Now, in the context of a stable relationship, I told my girlfriend about my hair thinning and we made together the decision that I would start the Finasteride again.
I want to make a note on the fact that, in my case, everything played out exactly as represented by the manufacturers (sides, effectiveness, reversal time). I think it is important to mention it because so many are skeptical about these facts. The truth is that everyone reacts differently. Finasteride did it for me. I used it with great results, then I stopped it, and for me it meant to stop hair loss for two years. I may continue to do this for a while.
I will report back soon with updated on this second round. Good luck to you all.
