Hi all,

I've been checking the site for about a month or so.... I gotta say I think its great. It's so awesome seein and hearing everyones experiences on this so taboo a subject...

Anyway's, I thought I'd give my 2 cents on my wee story and pose a question or two to the seasoned battlers, winning the war agains male pattern baldness. There is a little history of hair loss in my family, but it seems to skip men very often, so its a bit of a hit or a miss if your born into it. My old dad, whos 55, started lossin his hair in his 20's, but even at the grand old age of 55, still have a nice fine layer over the majority of his head, the same can be said about my grandad on my mums side.

Anyways, about a 1 or so ago, I noticed my temples were starting to charge a little, and the number of hairs in my comb when I brushed my hair were gettin a little worrying (40-50 in the shower!)... I stress about it for about 6 months and then decided to bite the bullet and go get it checked at my local GP (I have noticed a few of my friends my age also starting to loss their hair, so I kinda put 2 and 2 together). SO, at the age of 22 (23 in a month) I was sent to the dermo who put me on Proscar, cut into 1/4s taken once daily...

It's been 6 and a bit months, and so far my hair loss has either stopped, or has slowed significantly. Now rather than combing out 40-50 hairs in the shower, its more a dozen or so... So far so good! However, I really don't see much hope in the restoration of my once great NW1 hairline on just this treatment. Though the recession is minor (probably a 1cm on oneside and a little more on the other), I really want to try and stimulate hte fine miniturized hairs left to regrow to their once thick blonde glory...

Anyways, after reading this forums, I have decided to try minoxidil.... Today I went to a hair specialist in Perth (A+M) to see what advice they had. Now I know their game, so I went in loaded with questions as well as lot of info I have gather over the net, so after about 5 mins, the guy knew he wasn't dealing with an idiot whom he could sell his over priced regimes too. After hearing his little shpill, I told him flat out I didn't want it, but that I wanted to try minoxidil, and I wanted what was most successful, quick drying (I'm very active with sport and love the beach), and easiest to apply. I suggested to him that I would like to look at the Rogain foam, but he was at a loss to what it was (never heard of it), so I had to explain to him what it was all about (lol, that didn't look good on his behalf)... Anyway's, he told me that because I had caught it so early, I shouldn't have a problem gettin my hairline back to at least a much more straight/sysmetrical look....

He offered my generic minoxidil (7% with Ret-A 0.01%) that could only be bought with a perscription (which they provided lol) created by their company. From the photos he showed (those on a similar regime to what I'm wishin to go on) it seems the sh*t is pretty good. However what took me by surprise was the price... a 2 month dose is worth $190 Aus!!!! He explained to me that it was because Ret-A is perscription based in this country and your dose level will be tailored. Anyways, I thought what the hell... even though I'm a student for another year, whats a $100 a month (one night on the piss usually).

What do you guys think, particularly those other Australians on the forum, or those that have dealt with A+M? It would be great for some input, and perhaps some advice on what I should do... The cost is the main factor, but I was told by the sales guy that I only have to apply this stuff once a day (2ml) and that it is dry in an hour (so if I do it in the morning I can still hit up the beach in the morning)...

Thanks guys :)

Stop buying that expensive minoxidil and a retin and get your own for a lot cheaper. Also, add nizroral shampoo.

Could you elaborate on that... I'm kinda new to the subject of topical solutions. I know Australia is a year or 2 behind the rest of the west when it comes to meds, so what those of you have in yankeeland or the EU now, we still might not have it...

I was going to add Nizroral shampoo though, sounds ok to me

Yeah thats what I was thinking too... I kinda just told em that; "yeah I would come and visit their head doctor", and "yeah I'd take their treatment"...

Kinda weak, I wasn't really put on the spot, but I do have 2 weeks before I gotta see em again. Don't get me wrong, Ashley and Martin wouldn't be sellin me sh*t, cause they want to keep a good rep, but f***! nearly a $100 a month for 7% with RetA.... thats a bit rich... An I only want the stuff for my hair line...

One thing that did appeal to me was the guy told me you only have to apply the stuff once daily before bed which sounds a hell of alot better than doing it twice (plus its fast absorbing)...

Try to order Rogaine foam from ebay. It dries very fast and is easy to use.
The prica A+M is charging is simply insane. Good Luck!

Ashley and Martin are the worst

bababa I am not going to go into the details why ashley and martin are so bad as this as been discussed to death on this forum. Just do a search for ashley and martin.

There is nothing that ashley and martin can provide you that you can't get for at least the half the price, more convienient and of a better quality elsewhere.

The foam is great and is just as good as what you get at ashley and martin. I get my foam from http://www.rogainedirect.com/refill.asp and it only costs $60 for 4months.

The minoxidil you get from ashley and martin may contain an extra 2% but that is not going to make any difference. Plus there is no hard evidence proving retA helps regrow hair. If you desperately want RetinA than you can still buy it for a quarter the price off the net.

Ashley and martin and all sales. You have no access to anyone with any kind of medical training. So why don't you just cut out the middle man and buy direct.

From what I understand, you have a very little temple recession. You were smart, caught it early and are now on Finasteride. So far so good.

Lastly, why the hell do you want to go onto minoxdil! Mate I am warning you, only get onto minoxidil if you REALLY NEED REGROWTH. If you are aiming just to regain approx 1cm of your temple then Finasteride will probably achieve that - Like 1cm matters anyway.

If you get onto minoxdil you cannot stop. You have to keep using it for the rest of your life. Plus, Minoxidil could initiate a shed. Now this could be mild or severe depending on how you react. It is possible that you start using minoxdil on your temples and your entire hairline will thin very quickly. Generally it will grow back within 3-6 months, but can you handle that? Many people experience the shed, stop the medication and of course the hair never grows back the same.

Be careful. Think about what you are doing and don't rush in.

Thanks guys... sounds like I might reconsider that offer from A+M...

One other thing... about 2 months ago I went to another hair place in Perth just for a laugh to see what they would say. The women there said about the say, but that just the generic stuff would be great to regain the loss I have had, and that so far the loss was only really in the front area of the hair, not the back... Anyway, after a 2 second inspection yesterday, the guy at A+M said I had lost 40% density in the back. I thought that's a bit odd, because from what I could tell I haven't lost anything from the back... It's just funny that after 2 months that something like that could be picked up (if its there at all!)... just makes me more highly sceptical about the place...

Anyway's, when I get time over the next couple of days, I'll take some pics of my head to see what you guys think (once I work out how to post pics on here lol)...

Thanks guys (inparticular AussieExperiment)

Ok guys, finally had time to take some pics... as you can see I'm not much of a photographer, but at least you can get the picture. It's still only pretty mild, but what do you think, is there a case for minoxidil foam yet, or should I hold of a year or 2 and see how the finasteride works...

good job catching this early man....no all you need is finasteride in my opinion. Your hair looks great right now. My hairline looked like yours 3 years ago and i waited way to long to do somthing about it. You are catching it early...good job!

lol, thanks guys....

I denied it for like 6 months. My hairline just started looking weird and I couldn't figure it out. Then I noticed some of my friends were losing their hair.
What made me change was one day driving home from a dishwashing (dish piggin) job I was doing during the uni semester break to earn extra cash, I took off my hat (which I wore cause everyone else in the ktichen wore one) and I was just pullning out hair left right and center. I got home and talked it out with my mum and she said lets go down to the local GP and get it sorted out.
Anyways, added to the fact there is a bit of male pattern baldness in the family (my dad is between a NW4 and 5 and the age of 56), I started researchin the net and found a number of sites like this.
You guys have been a real help to me I gotta say. If more guys just admitted the they had a problem and went down to their GP or Dermo, they could at least be on the way to maintaining their hair for any number of years.

Peace...

Seem to be going through a fair shed over the last few days guys... its almost 7 months on the finasteride, anyone else get that? pulling out like 3,4,5 hairs almost everytime I brush my hand through my hair! We are experiences peak summer here where its like 35C plus everyday (and regularly 40C). Maybe this has something to do with it?
Anyways, any feedback....

Dame, just when I thought it was ok to relax with the shedding, I have another one happening again... less than 2 weeks after my last one. Does anyone seem to get this. You may have 2 or 3 days of a shed, then 2 weeks later it might happen again. I just added Nizoral 1% to the regime last week, so maybe that has something to do with it. But geez, I was combing out like dozens of hairs in the shower, that has pretty much stopped since I have been on the finasteride!

9 Months (almost) update

Hi all...

I'm almost at the 9 month mark on finasteride, and nearly 2 on nizoral. Not really much to tell, but somedays I really feel great about my hair, others I want to crawl in a little hole and hide. But usually I don't let that sh*t stop me for to long. I seem to have a days were I notice more hair falling out than others, but nothing to drastic. I seem to shed a great deal more hair after I use the nizoral (after my hair drys and the next morning). Not sure if this is a positive or negative.

I grew my hair out for a last 2.5 months, and all was well. but after awhile I couldn't get it to part great down the middle so I got a cut the other day which was not too bad (look like a school kid, its gotta grow out).

Pics include just before hair cut in natural light and some tonight cut under artificial. See what you think. I can defin see the thin line of miniturization across much of my hairline in one (LAME). Also my temples still have loads of small white velus hairs where my hairline used to be (have been there since beginning treatment), and you can see them pretty good in a couple of the pics.

I'm gonna give it to the year, then start foam across my hairline. If those baby hairs don't change, I think it would be a crime to leave them in that state and not use a treatment like the foam which may reawaken them.

Howdy guys... just a quick question. I'm almost at the 11 month mark and all seems well and good. I haven't had any "mini" sheds for a while now and I'm growing my hair out a bit again.
I've started to notice that the vast majority of hairs that I comb out in/after (though there isn't that many, maybe a dozen or so) and those that come out in my fingers during the day are nasty little velus hairs. Anyone experience this? Is it a good sign or bad. I can't say I've had any regrowth, but my hair feels alot healthier.
I'll post pics at the 12 month mark for those who are interested.

Peace...

12 Month update

Hey guys,
I'm about to reach 12 months on the finasteride, and so far so good. After coming to this site 6 months ago, I was able to research and tract my routine, plus add a few things along the way. Anyway, I grew my hair out for 3 and a bit months. Was lookin good, but alas there is a little tiny trail of miniturised hairs down my part. Not very visual, but they kind of stick up out of it while the long hair parts to the side. Lame, but we'll have to see what will happen over the next year or so. Most a concertrated at the very front. Other than that, no real sheds accept around exam time a few weeks ago.
I'm just got my hair cut pretty short and it's looking pretty good. I'm going away to europe for a month in a couple of weeks, and when I get back want to start Foam along my hairline (and push it back a bit).

Here are some pic long and short...
